the board's design is two years old. That's ancient.
Oh, that age is not too bad in itself. I think my new Asus P5W DH Deluxe is that old a design (the earliest versions had a BIOS that didn't handle Core2 Duo processors, so you had to borrow another processor to reflash them!). I am using a Q6600 on it, which required a reflash for support (but that worked with the unsupported processor). I chose this board precisely because it is old enough to be well known to be extremely stable and to work well for glitch-free audio usage. It is the prime recommended board for Hauptwerk (the reason for my wanting the quad-core processor), and in the MOTU (PC) forums, where it is recommended over newer boards.

Re: New computer .......
EUREKA, we found the problem. I took the whole computer into Micro Center and had their techie look at it. He tried a different processor, and no luck. He said the new ASUS motherboard wasn't working and said he'd take it in on trade for a 2nd new ASUS board, and he'd let me switch it right there at the store to make sure it would post. Well ASUS board #2 didn't work either, and we were all in bewilderment, until I said, well maybe it's the power supply, another techie looked at it and saw it has a 110/230 selector switch on it, and it was set to 230 volts. He switched it to 110 and everything started working as it should have and the computer posted. ARRRRRRGGGGGGG !!!!!!!
Well anyhow, at least now it's working.
Thanks for all the input guys, it's much appreciated.

Ha! That one once bit me in the butt, too! I'd forgotten about it. Glad to hear it's all good.

Re: New computer .......
Well it's not ALL good, the Samsung DVD player was causing the computer to crash every time I'd try to open or close it, so I replaced it with an old Lite-On dvd player and now everything seems to be working fine, and Windows XP is now installing.....geezsh what a day !!!!!

By the way, djwayne I'd like to invite you (and anyone else) over to join abxzone.com. It's a tech support forum I've belonged to since the mid-90's. Great bunch of people and a heck of a way to troubleshoot any computer issues you might have.
Drive your browser over to
www.abxzone.com
for a look/see. It's free and has solved more than one problem for me in the past twelve years or so.

Re: New computer .......
I'm still having problems with Windows XP installing. The hard drive got formatted but XP still is giving me a terrible time, it won't install like it should.....so I'm going to let it and myself cool down and go watch the baseball game between the Indians and Red Sox.

Re: New computer .......
Well, after about 20 failed attempts to install XP, I decided to try installing Vista to see what would happen, and it installed trouble free in just a few minutes. So it looks like I don't have a choice with this motherboard and/or processor as it seems to be calling for Vista only.
My only problem with Vista is my Audiophile sound card doesn't have Vista drivers available yet. Audition 3 is compatible so it shouldn't be a problem there.
Oh well, at least I have a good running computer tonight and I can sleep well. I really didn't want Vista, but it looks like I don't have a choice, as XP refused to install, and kept shutting down my computer.

What, it chases you round the park and then steals your sandwiches?

Yep, Vista and this computer has eaten many more than one of my lunches. I'm getting the feeling that the E6750 processor is what caused the Vista only experience. I don't have documentation on that, but that's the way the computer acted. Oh Well.

With the known problems w.r.t. Vista, Audition and lack of driver support, I would suggest to have a 2nd (21st? ) try to install XP on your new computer. What problems did you encounter, what error messages did you see?
I did a very quick google, but did not found compatability problems with the E6750 processor and Windows XP, and I did find quite a few reports on XP in combination with E6750 processors.

Re: New computer .......
Well XP would get to a certain point then shut off the computer, there was an error message but it only would flash for a second before the computer would shut down, not giving me a chance to read it. I've installed XP many times and never had problems like this. So it appears to be a problem with the hardware. The board design has been around for awhile but the processor is fairly new...so that's why I'm blaming the processor. I still have the Intel motherboard and I may get another chip for that someday, but not in the next month or so. So I can use that for an XP computer once I get a proper chip for it. But right now, I'm done building computers for awhile.
In the meantime though, Vista is working great on this computer. It worked okay on my old computer, but slow....on this computer it runs good, and it's quick. Audition 3 does support Vista, so that should be okay, that is my main concern. In the meantime, I can use the mini sound card that came with the motherboard. that should work okay until either M-Audio comes up with Vista drivers, or I get a new vista compatible sound card....so having Vista for me, is not the end of the world. The only problem I have with Vista is the M-Audio drivers, other than that it's okay with me, it looks nice actually. DRM has never been a problem for me.

Re: New computer .......
The problem is that there are so many variables and so many different parts, it's a small miracle it works at all. The problem could be with the memory, buss speeds, video card, processor, motherboard, who knows......all I know is that it works with Vista but not with XP, why, I don't know for sure.

Re: New computer .......
Well today is a new day. Vista has been running all day with no crashes, Audition 2.0 and Sonar Home Studio 6 XL are both working fine. I did have some settings problems with Windows Media Player, but I got that fixed, so now everything is working fine and I'm ready for AA3.
It's interesting, Audition 2.0 now loads up in about 3 seconds. This new computer is fast.
