WWW

I, for one, would like to learn what the radio market is doing for commercial production these days. As a freelance voice over, I would like to break into the promo/station liner area. This is something I did for many years when I was in radio and miss it (and the $, of course).

Anyone?

People who do radio, I think! You may have to give this a little time.

If you look in the 'old' forum in the radio section, you will find several threads relating to this - including one hilarious one about voice sharing that got a few people rather wound up!

One good move would be to gather the email addresses of those guys who used to frequent the Radio Forum and drop them a line telling them where we are.

I suspect many of them just gave up when Syntrillium closed the door and didn't bother to follow the subsequent saga.

Of course some of them may just be too busy to go searching for the new forum, and since whatever version of the software they are using appears to be working fine they'll stay thinking that as God's-Gift-to-Radio-Production they know everything already. rolleyes

Unfortunately, with so many stations now owned by huge corporations that are always looking for ways to save a buck, more and more station personnel are multi-tasking, which means less outside help in regards to production. Many (most) stations have an outside "voice guy" for station imaging, promos, etc., but most rely on inside talent for commercial production (aside from commercials that are produced outside the station). If that's the route you're looking at (doing imaging/promo voice work) than you would probably need to get a demo together and hire some sort of talent agent. You would also need your own studio (preferably with an ISDN line). I'm sure others on this forum will have more advice for you. Good luck, and I'm glad people are posting here again!

This may be a 'simple' matter of spreading the word, as has been suggested. I think that being proactive about this somehow probably is the way to go, though. I can think of one or two places where info about this site could probably be placed to some advantage - I will contact one or two people about this, and see what happens...

Starting sending emails with links to this forum.

I thought about this for a while, and came up with a somewhat different solution - as you will have gathered if you look at the announcement! (and now the forum title...)

I agree with the idea of lumpěng all these thing together - certainly makes for a broader base.

However, it seems to me the old Radio forum was considerably more active than the current one and I'm sure one of the reasons is simply because many of those who used to frequent it just lost touch with us.

Therefore, I'm still of the opinion that it would be a good idea to mail the old users to let them know we exist and try to attract them back.

I'm sure that's true - but is anybody actually going to do it?

Good question.  I was making the assumption that there already existed a database of old Radio users.  If not, then it would mean trawling through the Syntrillium database.  The problem with that is the user profiles are no longer available online (although I suspect that someone must have all thisa stuff on a disc somewhere).

I would be happy to do it, if it was thought it would actually help.

Trouble is, although I have the user profile for anyone that ever posted to the Syntrillium forum, those user profiles don't themselves contain e-mail addresses. When you e-mailed someone through the forum, you did so by running an Active Server Page, in this case, pop_mail.asp, that would look up a members e-mail address, using their member id number (if the member chose to allow it) in the database. The actual Access or SQl database, which would be what Adobe used to try to "port" the forum. And, as far as I know, nobody else has this. At least, they're not supposed to !  Smiley

So you would be limited to those members who, in their profile, supplied an alternative method of corresponding, such as a "Cool Link, Homepage, or ICQ or AIM number........Slim pickings.... Sad
