So what's your point?  cheesy

Looks like Traktion has support for ASIO and VSTs, two things which would make Cool Edit great instead of very good!

I love Adobe Audition/Cool Edit Pro X.X. I don't think I will ever switch because I've gotten so used to the interface. When ever I try to use anything else, it just seems too damn complicated. I really hope the upgrade is MAJOR with VST help and such. Hopefully it will be free since I  did buy the actual version.

I also hope the upgrade will be free but I doubt it. I believe Adobe's bigger upgrades seem to cost. Like Photoshop for example.

Um, yeah... I highly doubt it'll be a free upgrade, but hopefully not more than $50-100. I would almost say that the upgrade has to include ASIO and VST support (of some kind or other), because virtually everything else has that at this point.  Otherwise, AA will really be left in the dust, at least by potential first-time buyers.  I just saw that my old favorite (now a distant 2nd to AA) multi-track program, Cakewalk's Guitar Tracks Pro, is coming out with a new version soon, and yup, new features include ASIO and VST...

I know this has been batted around plenty already, but the more I think about it, if Audition could include even a fairly simple MIDI recording/sequencing/editing capability, I think it would really become the ultimate all-around program.  I don't think Traktion is trying to compete with CEP/AA, though, but with Sonar, which is touted as being the ultimate all-in-one program, and is apparently selling in bundles. I never liked Sonar and especially its audio functioning, and I think AA blows it away in that respect, but unless AA can keep up with some of the things that Sonar users take for granted, it's bound to lose ground (not only to Sonar but now to programs like Traktion).

On a related subject, I was wondering lately why they don't market CEP/AA wider than just through Adobe's site and very few others (I also saw it at J&R.com). You open up the Musician's Friend catalog, or go to ZZounds.com or Guitar Center or wherever, and you see Sound Forge, Sonar, Cubase, etc., but not Audition. I would think they're losing out on a lot of 'browsing customers'.

About Sound Forge...  I tried out the demo a while ago, and didn't realize that it's just a single track WAV editor. I wonder what advantages SF has in that respect that AA doesn't (while also including multi-track editing and mixing)?

Can you use Sound Forge, Sonar, Cubase, etc. with Adobe's video editing software to edit sound?  Is Audition in the same market as these other programs, so far as Adobe is concerned?  Serious question, because I don't know.  I am assuming not, but that is an uninformed assumption.

Actually, one must consider the marketing issue through the corporate mindset, not the user mindset (us).  Consider the issue of "what it is" vs. "what it could become".  The users are contemplating "what it could become".  Adobe quite possibly looked only at "what it is" - in their search to find an editor to complement their video editing software.  In that, it may be that Adobe did not realize or consider the broader implications of what they were purchasing.  It is possible that they bought a product only to make it a compatible sound editor for their video editing software - when the reality is that CEP could be made into something far larger than that (and I don't mean bloatware) by a company with the resources and the vision to make it happen.

The next release of Audition should give us some clues about Adobe's mindset in this regard.  However, the Creator of Cool Edit has made it clear to others of the old Synt. forum that he is very much involved in the ongoing updating / upgrading of Audition.  It would surprise me if he were involved with his creation to that extent only to turn it into an appendage of Premiere (if that is the right name).  However, stranger things have happened when money talks.

@ Shazbot .. I don't think Cool Edit was ever a musician's favourite editing tool because it was never a midi sequencer. And I think that midi support is the point to deciding whether to add ASIO and VST support (not to mention changing the user base completely which they might not want). It wouldn't just be a matter of adding VST and ASIO but Adobe would have to consider actually adding everything needed for full midi input recording support. And if they did this, it would quickly become a musician's software, and that would need a different kind of professional support too.

As Steve G wrote a while back in another thread: Audition won't let you record MIDI, so you have no immediate need for a MIDI in just on Audition's account, unless you want to use MIDI control signals or tme code, which it will handle.

I actually use other tools for composition but I agree with shazbot. Maybe it's a new york thing Wink ... But I feel that cooledit is the perfect program, at least for me, to use. I am a producer but also a musician. Just my two cents.

thats why i laughed when I saw tracktion. Look at it. "Easy to use, uncomplicated" oh but look at the horrible looking interface! Wink

I understand the difference of how Cool Edit/Audition may be meant more for audio recording/editing professionals as opposed to musicians. However, Pro Tools is still the most widely used audio professional software program, right? And ProTools has full MIDI recording/sequencing/editing capabilities. Same with Sonar. It just seems that Audition is so close to being a 'complete' music production/recording/editing/mastering program, and all it would need to put it into that definition would be some MIDI capabilities.
