Cool Edit Pro 2/WinXP - everytime I attempt to save as a WMA file, I get the following message: "File is probably in use by another application. Please close the other application and try saving again." The only application running with the file open is Cool Edit Pro. I should explain that this happens under any set of circumstances...including when attempting to save a new file to WMA format...so there's no way (that I can see how) another program could have the file open No problems saving to other formats...only WMA.
Any suggestions?

There might be some relevant advice in 'Error opening file for output'
- or search the forum for "WMA", there are loads of previous posts mentioning it, while waiting for more expert advice.

I appreciate the input. I searched for references to WMA prior to posting my question. Yes, there are a large number posts related to WMA, but none that address my question. Have also throughly searched help files and the Syntrillium Knowledge Base. I don't believe the problem is related to sampling, since if I open a WMA file in Cool Edit Pro and then attempt to save it (to any folder) the resulting message is the same, "File is probably in use by another application. Please close the other application and try saving again." Have also tried re-installation of CEP2...makes no difference. The problem seems to be isolated to CEP2 as I have loaded a couple of audio file conversion utilities and they have had no problem saving to WMA file format. I prefer not to use such utilities, as CEP2 does an incredibly good job of preserving file integrity and audio quality while said utilities seem somewhat questionable (the absolute worst is the Microsoft MP3 to WMA conversion utility).

Sorry, but I have to sit on the sidelines on this one, since I don't run XP on any of my own machines, and haven't seen this problem on any of my associates' systems, either.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe something stupid is happening with XP itself that might be causing you grief. If this is an audio-only machine, you can just try turning off all the extraneous "system services" that XP is always running and see if that helps. Make sure there isn't anything hiding in the background - turn off your anti-virus software, and turn off System Restore, too! If you've got 'FindFast' running, be sure to turn that piece of junk off, as well.
I know - I'm a lot of help, right? Heh!

Best of luck, GP! -Jon

Thanks Jon...your suggestions are appreciated and XP comments are very true...System Restore is simply a dangerous resource hog and File Indexing Service is just a waste. Office's "Fast Find" and OSA.exe are also Microsoft trademark resource hogs that offer nothing positive in return.
I have researched this problem thoroughly and can find no answer. I do have Windows Media Player Series 9 installed and am beginning to think this may be the root of my problem...possibly it replaced a Windows system file or two required by CEP2.
Does anyone else have CEP2 and the Series 9 Media Player installed? If so, can you save to WMA from CEP2?

Thanks for the suggestions! I took Syntrillium, M.D.'s advice and contacted Syntrillium Support today. Within an hour, they emailed back with the solution to the problem (was related to installation of Windows XP Service Pack 1). Fast and knowledgeable...that's what I call REAL technical support!

Within an hour? WITHIN AN HOUR?! What's wrong with these people! Don't they understand the tech industry's concept of service? They're supposed to let service calls ring at least 20 times, then put the caller on hold for at least an hour, then transfer the caller to another service rep, so the robin can go 'round again.
No accountability, that's what it is.

This is a problem with Service Pack 1 of Windows XP which throws Cool Edit Pro 2.0 off when it tries to install the WMA files required for saving or opening WMA files. This problem only happens if Windows XP is installed and then Windows XP SP1 is installed and then Cool Edit Pro 2.0 is installed. If Cool Edit Pro 2.0 was installed and then XP was updated to SP1, this would not be seen.
So far, here's the only fix we have for this problem (it must be done in EXACTLY this order):
1. Completely shut down Cool Edit Pro and any other running applications.
2. Rename \Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\WMVCORE2.DLL to WMVCORE2.BAK
3. Check to see if the WMVCORE2.DLL file exists in the \Windows\System32\dllcache folder. (this is a hidden folder) If it exists, rename \Windows\System32\dllcache\WMVCORE2.DLL to WMVCORE2.BAK
4. Rename \Windows\System32\WMVCORE2.DLL to WMVCORE2.BAK
You will get a warning from "windows file protection" that important files were being changed that would effect windows stability. It will probably ask for the Service Pack 1 disk. Hit Cancel and then confirm.
5. Uninstall and then Re-install Cool Edit Pro 2.0.
6. Rename \Windows\System32\WMVCORE2.DLL to WMVCORE2.OLD

7. Rename \Windows\System32\WMVCORE2.BAK to WMVCORE2.DLL
8. Rename \Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\WMVCORE2.BAK to WMVCORE2.DLL
9. If the file existed in step #3, rename \Windows\System32\dllcache\WMVCORE2.BAK to WMVCORE2.DLL
10. At this time, the problem should be fixed, but it might be a good idea to reinstall XP Service Pack 1.
Hope that helps anyone who may have the problem.

I have been having this same problem ("File is probably in use") with Windows 2000 when trying to use the Batch function to save WAV files.
It must be relatively new, since nobody reported it before AFAK. Have not yet tried the fix, but I'd assume it's the same or at least related.

As a follow-up, Win2000 does not have a WMVCORE2.DLL. I found a WMVCORE.DLL file, but it ain't a Windows system file. Some other MS app must have added it. I renamed it and it didn't help the problem.

I'm not completely positive, but I believe this fix applies only to Windows XP with MS Service Pack 1. SP1 for XP is huge and supposedly "fixes" many of the shortcomings of Windows XP...but in typical Microsoft fashion, the "fix" created a whole new set of problems (but that's a whole different subject). My best advice is that you contact with your question...they offer the absolute best technical support.

Very good likelyhood that CEP2 and SoundForge6 could both exibit this problem...while another program may not. Before getting the problem solved, I tried several audio file converters...all of which had no problems saving to WMA. I cannot say for sure that this fix will solve this problem in SoundForge6, but it certainly will not hurt to try it. The CEP2 fix was posted here (above) on December 11 at 8:40:41 PM.
