unless you happen to be SteveG who has, it seems, several. How he's managed to give so much of his time to the forum while still fitting in all that, plus visits to the dentist, I can't imagine. And it's been quality time too. Graeme too is rushing from a click here to a crackle there, Jonrose has his hands full giving the clients whatever they are prepared to pay for, MusicConductor is doing 'just' that and much more too - and so it goes on. I'm sniffing at a Proper Job at the moment, but inspired by the examples here won't let that get in the way of a daily few minutes on the forum - which will be wherever the Cool people still congregate. /quote]
Well - you see, it's like this. All the people you mention are, in one way or another 'self-employed'. As anyone else who 'enjoys' this status will know, what it really means is that you work twice as hard as anyone with a 'proper' job - usually for pretty much the same financial return.
I can't speak for the others, but I tend to work late at night (often, through the night) since it means I don't have to put up with the phone ringing, etc., and often have a few minutes on my hands while some number crunching is taking place - so it's an ideal time to pop into the other computer and write things such as this.

This just about sums it up. I don't sleep much, and don't get interrupted by the phone in the middle of the night either. And I type pretty fast - okay, not super-secretary level, but as fast as I can think, which is good enough... The number-crunching thing is also true - having 2 PCs in the same place with a KVM switch aids the whole process.
No, I don't make a fortune. If I wanted to make a fortune, I'd have to do rather more of some of the things I do, which would detract from the more enjoyable ones. But I know when I'm well off - SWMBO works at least as hard as I do in a stressful job, and gets paid pretty well for doing it. If she didn't, I'd probably have to. My business partner also works very hard, and I also reap the benefit of this, but it does involve quite a bit of work on my part - she's not that altruistic/philanthropic!
I did the 'nose to the grindstone' bit for ages - it gave me migraines on a regular basis, and that alone is a very considerable incentive not to go back to doing it if I can avoid it. We're not broke yet, but the kids are at the very expensive stage, so this could go wrong any day soon, and probably will... (Universities, Colleges, living abroad, you name it...)
The downside of being self-employed is that you are a hostage to fortune. It can't be avoided, but if you and those around you can live with it, it's an improvement on the alternative, IMHO, because the benefits outweigh that aspect of it. So things come and go a bit. For instance, I have to spend most of the rest of this week proof-reading a book, but there are limits to the amount of this I can do in one go, so I won't be hiding.
Actually, one best-seller would fix a lot of this quite nicely... Hmm....

LOL! I got rid of that particular problem a while back! What's left is paid for, fortunately. And I have a strict policy on anything costing more than about £50 - and that's that it has to have paid for itself in advance. This stops me buying all sorts of things, but it doesn't stop occasional preamp construction, or trying to persuade other people to buy things for me!

Question for zemlin: if this forum is switched off in August when they turn on the Adobe forum, or reasonably soon thereafter - what are your plans for the Collaboration Site? Will you leave it up for a while, or will you shut it down immediately? If you leave it up for a while, we could pass "important" messages to each other by leaving text files there.
Does anybody here need a refresher on how to log onto the Collaboration Site?
Also, nice sentiments everybody. It seems we all pretty much feel the same way about things forum-wise. This thread is taking on the feel of a year-book signing at the end of high school. (Good, bittersweet thing, not bad thing):)

Havoc, now don't start getting all mushy on us, OK?
Nice thread, guys. I can't tell you where else I've had so much fun learning so much. Three cheers for the forum & its constituents! (or at least the honorable ones. But then the dis-honorable ones are part of the entertainment value, which only adds to the overall worth of the forum at large, so in a sort of non-committal, indirect, backhanded way, the less-than-honorable contributors to the forum deserve an infinitesimal regard as well, even though it is a mere speck of gratitude in comparison to the many dozens of fine, witty, and knowledgable contributors who rightfully should be commended for making this community the remarkable, educational, and sociable place that it is. So there.)

As Havoc rightly points out, the web is, indeed, small enough that our paths may cross again. And some of you still know how to find me, anyway, should you care to do so.
I must say, once again, that I'm not too hip on the idea of all this information going away, either. I don't think anyone's up to the task of writing an all-encompassing FAQ on it - it's just too vast, and most of the candid remarks which help to illustrate the pertinent points (aside of being entertaining) would probably be lost, anyway. And I really can't see them spending any time porting the Snitz database into their forum format.
I still haven't made any decisions as to how much effort I'll spend on trying to navigate Adobe's forums - they are, after all, pretty damned dismal in comparison to the Snitz forums. But I shall enjoy this one until its dying day, though. 8)
Cheers to you all.
Best... -Jon

I have a regular (4 on/4 off) job that is the financial foundation for my clan. On the "off days", I'm usually tracking, mixing, etc... I got so busy doing that I had to give up "playing out" for hire with bands. (which I did regularly for years... up until about a couple of months ago). I still do regular "sound" jobs, (which WAS my fulltime employment for years). After years of running "others" equipment, I thought I would amass my own... "been there, done that". It was a major P.I.T.A., so now I managed to unload alot of unnecessary "live" gear and keep what could be of use to me in the studio. The rest got sold for investment cash. I still trying to finish a "personal" project that I never seem to have time for. :S
Quote: |
I still can't believe how quickly you and Voodoo creeped up on me! |
Alot of that can be attributed to my "leave of absence" from the "regular" job for several months. Like I alluded to previously.... during that time, I spent entirely too much time in the chair in front of the computer.

I find it strange, all this "good-byeing". We didn't do that when the original forum was switched to the Snitz version.
Is there a foreboding that if the content of this forum doesn't follow, then it's too daunting a task to go through all the discussions that would have to take place again? I feel like Jonrose about this in that I sure hate to see the knowledge here become unavailable. I wouldn't blame anyone for saying, "It was a great ride, but I'm not up to explaining things all over again for all the new users that will come aboard ship." ... because if the content of this forum does not follow to the next format, then there will be the newbies needing more personal feed and care (and some of us, too), with no threads to refer them to.... X(
Somehow I can't think that if Adobe can recognize the loyalty of CE users (as has been acknowledged) and the effectiveness of this forum to build sales and knowledge of the product, that they would trash its contents. It would set the new forum *way* back.
As someone pointed out some time ago: the contents of forums are basically all text. Is there anyone knowledgeable enough to know if it's an easy thing to move text over to a new forum? Would seem so, since I believe we changed from one format in the original forum to the Snitz version.

I think Adobe are very much hoping that the forum contributors will stick around -

A. Adobe will provide service and support for all customers who upgrade to Adobe Audition. Information about Cool Edit will be posted on the Adobe Web site, and customers can share information about Cool Edit
on the user-to-user forums. |
- which means that anyone who has any Cool Edit program and does not choose to use Audition instead will only get support from the forum and the 'information on the Adobe Web Site' - or am I misreading this?

It isn't very well written, but if you read it literally it says that only "customers" can share information, not "everybody". I have noticed on several Adobe products and sites, that a company that specialises in software for communication through words and pictures has a bad habit of making statements that can be interpreted in several ways. So the answer is - you could be right, or wrong

I'm familiar with "Access" from Microsft - which is one of three(?) databases that Snitz Forums 2000 can use. Access is one file (although with many sub-files contained inside that can be "unzipped" if desired - when zipped, 1 database = 1 file) - and I have successfully transferred zipped Access database files from one computer to another with no problem. I assume that the database Syntrillium uses for this Forum operates in much the same manner as Access (it may be Access for all I know). If I can transfer database files from one computer to another with ease, it should be just as easy to transfer from one server to another. With at least the following caveats:
1. This forum database file has to be huge; that could influence the desire to transfer it to Adobe's servers;
2. There has to be a hardware/software routine that lets so many people dial into and access the database simultaneously. Adobe's process for doing this might be different from Syntrillium's, and Adobe may not want to adapt its system to accept the Snitz database. This may in fact be a larger issue than transferring the database file itself to Adobe's server;
3. The Syntrillium and Cool Edit name is embedded in this forum as headers. I don't know how difficult or easy it would be to change that. Also, the entire set of posts in the database contain references to Syntrillium and Cool Edit within the posts. I don't know how difficult or easy it would be to change all those references to Adobe and Audition. Adobe probably doesn't want an Audition forum that is full of posts making reference to Syntrillium and Cool Edit.
4. I'm sure there are other issues I haven't thought of.
If Adobe wants to start fresh with a new Audition forum on their own forum software, and if Points 1 and 2 above are manageable by Adobe, they might at least transfer this forum database to their own server(s) and make it read-only. In that way, nothing new could be posted, but everyone would have access to the knowledge contained in the CE Forum through using the "search" button. However, we don't presently know whether Points 1 and 2 above are manageable by Adobe.

I understand the Adobe forums search leaves something to be desired. But isn't our search button part of the Snitz Forums 2000 package? If it is, it should be easy to search this Forum if it is transferred to the Adobe servers. If it is not, and if we would have to search the CE Forum with Adobe's search capabilities, then my idea is not as useful as I originally thought.

Hi There,
I'm over here now from the "Export Forum Data" thread where bonnder said come over here!...
From a different angle, keeping the valuable data alive:
Looking at customer support, community of users, community intelligence built on the shoulders of a searchable data bank...
It is way cheaper for Adobe to beef up the needs of the users of the Forum than to have the experienced users get bored and leave. I worked in a support center for a number of years and it is way cheaper to head the calls off at the forum. Otherwise you have to hire support staff... You all didn't realize you were highly trained Syntrillium/Adobe support employees or did you? You could probably make anywhere from $50-$65K per year in the states easily.
So, if the community has a common front, wants features, can present a business plan...unification, eh ?
That way when the VP of Forums walks in to their monday meeting they can say, "The Audition users want this an that on the forum but it'll cost $50K per year, otherwise they'll leave. Um, then we should hire 3 more support specialists at $50K per year". Which one do they pick?

I did some sums. The forum isn't probably anywhere near as big as you think. Even if you round up all the numbers, it comes to less than one gigabyte! But this doesn't invalidate the rest of what you're saying, though.
A quick flog through the sums gives:
Number of posts/number of topics gives you an average of just under 8 posts per topic
A typical 8 post topic takes up 61k - let's say 70k
There are 12,620 topics at an average of 70k each - this gives 883.4 Megabytes of data (including all the formatting!)
Let's say I'm a pessimist - call it 1 gig.[/list:a9fe90eb45]
Even if I'm a factor of 5 out, this is hardly a storageissue, is it? You could probably compress all five of the forums plus the other bits onto one CDwithout toomuch bother...

Thanks for the numbers, SteveG. If you are correct, that makes it that much less understandable if Adobe doesn't just port the database over and connect it up. Unless they have connection issues with the Snitz Forums 2000 software as I alluded to at the end of Page 1 above.
So, all together now - users of the world unite:
Port our Forum; Port our Forum; Port our Forum; Port our Forum; Port our Forum;

I assumed a normal distribution - not unreasonable with numbers this large. But even if the the number of posts per thread is skewed, it shouldn't make that much difference. I have got a large number of threads between 60 and 90k in my quick check, so I'd say it wasn't far out. If the forum was archived, it would take up far less space, because a significant amount of each thread is all that stuff you can see up there at the top of the page, which isn't strictly neccessary.

Hi!
I've kind of adopted your cause in the few days since this issue first arose. I know you've got a lot more questions than answers, and I'm in no position to do anything more than just cross-post, but I hate to see a thriving forum fall apart. I think with a little work you'll be able to cross over to the Adobe forums with most of your content intact. I've posted a request on the Adobe Forum Comments and Announcements page to see if one of their website administrators can help y'all (http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14@@.ee6b30e). No guarantees, but I agree that the technical data alone is too valuable for Adobe to abandon, much less the continued goodwill of their future customers.
I urge you not to dismiss the Adobe forums too quickly--for the most part we're folks just like you (with the requisite curmudgeons, trolls, flame-baiters, and miscellaneous idiots thrown in for good measure). Yeah, the search function isn't as good as it could be, but they're aware of it and I suspect if enough people squawk they'll make it better. I think once you get used to the new surroundings it'll be pretty much business as usual, except for the name change.
Good luck, and keep making that wheel squeak until you get results!

Thanks Scott. Ya done good.:)
I think there are really two issues here. One is whether a user wants to exert the effort to learn something new (the Adobe forum layout). The other is the potential loss of valuable technical information if this Snitz Forums 2000 database is allowed to die.
I think most of the serious users of this forum can't resist a good challenge, and will make a serious effort to learn the Adobe forums routine if that becomes necessary. But exerting that effort will not make up for losing the technical information contained in this Forum's database.
At the end of the first page of this thread I suggest that perhaps Adobe can transfer this database to their own servers and at least make the database/forum read-only if the don't want to let us continue to post to it. After seeing SteveG's numbers, I'm even more convinced that this is an idea that merits some serious consideration by Adobe. But then, Adobe maybe already is planning to port the forum/database to their own server(s) and let us continue posting to it. Who knows?? (I'm sure somebody knows - they just aren't saying.)

If it were priced correctly, I imagine most of us would buy one. However, owning the Forum on CD (FoCD???) wouldn't help out when a newbie posts a question that has been answered in detail on this forum. We wouldn't be able to say "click on the search button at the top of this page and search on (fill in the blank)". That will be the real value of having this forum ported over to Adobe's servers - even if it is read-only.

As long as we're asking for forum features maybe we could get the speech synthesis metadata option I read about somewhere. I think Abode could afford it.:P
So instead of someone yelling at me in CAPITAL LETTERS they could select the 'yelling voice' option - that way I won't take it so hard.
Or if I ask another stupid compression question the reply could come back with - you guessed it - the 'condescension voice' option. That way nobody has to feel bad because their reply is all filled up with italicised words. I guess we could sample 7 of 9 from Startrek or someone like that.
Cool idea, eh ? Did I miss any others ?

Maybe 1 GB is not much - still, keep in mind that this is text, and compressed it would take much less that 50% of original - but the information here values more than just a few terabytes !

So I read this kind of junk for a living (the scottish building standards) and that anwser says "No"
They really arn't so good at diplomatic statements and After returning here after a month or so away, I'm not feeling so optomistic as before.
Now I use adobe stuff on a daily basis ( unfortunately rather more than I'm doing music at the moment) and when I go back to school in september after 17 years in the same job I'm going to be relying on adobe stuff to feed me. So... err I'm pretty familiar with them and think their software and support is some of the best out there.
BUT the forums are quite hard going although this is partly due to the shear volume of stuff on them.
What really does worry me is the announcement by adobe first with only a catch up statement here, Rather than a similtanious statement. I'm not sure that that suggests the respect for the existing user base that we are looking for!
Obviously in the short term they really need the cep users if only as an instant market share which can be used in promotion.
"Audition had over XXXXX users within the first month of release"
don't like the name much either but hey....
Anyway it's all a bit scary really but it's going to make the audio bit of the multimedia course a scooch if the college decides to go for "Audition"
oh I've lost track again.
:O

Heh, there it goes again. |
Tis pity that clearing 3,000 doesn't get awarded with another star -- which Adobe, of course, must please consider correcting. Your consolation prize may be overtaking Ozpeter (watch out, Oz!)!

Actually, he overtook me pretty quickly. He's got "7.04 posts per day" to my "3.84". I'd guess that he's safe for now.

Yeah, I post too much. (Is this post strictly necessary?!). I've recently realised I spend more time on this forum than I do communicating with family and friends. That's not good. I shall have to lower my average (wherever I'm posting) and cut out the not-really-necessary ones.
