Seeing as the Windows Media 9 Series has recently had its final release, I've spent some time updating the filter with the latest release of the format SDK. You can get it from here:

Well, I've never tried opening avi files in Cool Edit Pro (my 30 day trial ran out long ago ), so I wouldn't know too much about that. The avi.flt is not dependent on wmvcore, so I don't think you'll find too much joy fiddling about with that. If you're using one of the pre-release versions of the Windows Media 9 series software, then I would suggest installing the final version which was released last week.
The wma2.flt that comes with Cool Edit Pro 2 is dependent on wmvcore2.dll (WMF7/ , the one above is linked to wmvcore.dll (WMF9). If anyone is having problems with wma files, all I can suggest is to try out both and see which one works best. Keep a copy of all your original Cool Edit files, of course 8)

I am trying to open a wma file in Cool Edit 2000 - I unzipped and placed the wma9.flt file into my C:\Program Files\Cool2000 dir.
However, Cool Edit, when I start it and try to open the wma file, it doesn't recognise the format (asks me for the rate, etc) - when opens it as a big bunch of static.
Any suggestions?

I hope no-one wants my number ;)
ANYWAY.....
You need the Windows Media 9 runtime files for the filter to work properly, so if you havn't installed Windows Media Player or Encoder 9, you'll need to do that first.
If it still doesn't work then the only alternative is to find some other decoder, or get CE Pro 2.1, which now has integrated WMA9 support (including multichannel & higher bit depths). I hate to sound like a salesman for Adobe, but there you go :D

PS. Totally unrelated, but for those that are interested, there's now also a FLAC filter on my site.
