Today I started getting a notification on my computer that Plextor Utilities has a new upgrade available. So I click on it to download it and it asks to install it, I say yes and then it disappears without installing it, this happens about every 4-5 minutes. So I figure lets try to upgrade using the upgrade fiunction in Plextools. It starts a download but very slow, after a few minutes the "do you want to upgrade" box opens again click on download and it stops the slow download, then after a while the download stops completely....I've been messing around with this for over an hour, and got frustrated and decided the only way to stop the nagging was to un-install plextools completely. So now the nagging has stopped. I rarely use plextools anyhow so I don't care...when they get their software bugs worked out maybe then I'll re-install it.  Until then,,,,seeya...

You don't think it might be more constructive to talk to Plextor about the problems than to vent your frustration here?

Plextools and Plextor Utilities are completely different programs written by people in completely different parts of the world. So which one are we talking about?

All significant Plextools development stopped in 2006 when Plextor stopped designing their own drives and, unless things have changed in the last few days, the newest version is 3.16 which has been available for free for a few years now.

Yes, it's the latter that James referred to that's an essential tool in my typical work.  I can only wish that they'd be an upgrade to it and some further development.  But alas...

DJ, since you've ranted and have our attention, how about detailing for us what drive you're using and (of course!) which version of their software.

It's too bad, really, as Plextor's been great by me, that their outsourcing has produced a boo-boo.

Well I was hoping to alert other forum members of the potential problems as I know there are a lot of other Plextor users here. I believe I used to have the 3.16 version of Plex Utilities but I can't say for sure as I have already uninstalled the program. It seems odd that Plextor Utilities would be scouring the internet for updates, without my knowledge or consent, ....what else is it doing ?? It also seems odd that a company such as Plextor would have software that acts so badly.

Just curious if any other users are having similar experiences.

Since I un-installed the program, the nagging has stopped. I haven't used the program for anything anyway, so I won't miss it much.

DJ - you've definitely got 2 bits of software confused. If it was version 3.16 then you're talking about Plextools Professional XL. By default (and in common with lots of other software) it checks the Plextor website for updates on start up. If you don't like this behaviour you can turn it off in the preferences by going to Options->Preferences and look about halfway down in the Advanced Options part of the display. If you change something then it is a good idea to also click on the Save to Registry button as well to ensure that your choice is stored.

My copy doesn't say anything about a new update which is what I'd expect as the real Plextools development team ceased to exist in 2006. There were a few minor updates after that but nothing substantial.

Doesn't matter, it's gone now and the nagging has stopped. I have no intentions of re-installing it. It was really getting annoying as it would ask to update every five minutes and no matter what I'd do it wouldn't update. I don't know why all of a sudden it started doing this, but it was very annoying.
