CD Audio not working

I have recently reformatted my work computer and am having a few problems.

For some reason, I can't import audio from CDs into audition.  It says "unsupported format"
 
I also can't convert audio CDs using DbPoweramp as I get a similar error message.
 
However, I can convert CDs to WAV using TLC (A scott studios program) and I can access (play) the audio using Windows media Player.

So I know it's not a problem with the CD drive itself.  Also I can import other files from CDs into audition (mp3 and aiff etc), just not CD Audio.
 
I assume it's a codec issue, but I've installed and reinstalled Audition on my home computer multiple times and have never run into this problem.

It seems weird that this codec wouldn't be a part of the program.

Any ideas?

I'm sure you're right, but are you sure that when it does work, that it's not via the CD drive's analogue output?

I'll be honest...I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that.   

But, I'll try to answer.   

I think the CD drive is fine because I can import other files (digitally) into audition from CDs.  It seems to me that Audition for whatever reason is just having problems with this particular format (CD audio - CDA?)

I've also pulled word docs and other things off of CDs (not using audition of course) so I'm pretty sure it's not the CD Drive itself.

To be honest, Audition is probably doing you a favour by not handling this as it doesn't deal with damaged CD's very well. You could end up with clicks and pops in your audio without realising it. You should really be using something like Exact Audio Copy to extract audio from CD's.

Thanks for the answer but I don't know if "Exact Audio Copy" would work either.  As i said, dbPoweramp isn't letting me rip CDs either, and I assume it's a similar program.  I don't think it's an audition specific problem, but I was hoping somebody may have gone through this before.

ps.  I've imported CD audio hundreds of times and I've never encountered any clicks or pops.  I'm not disputing this fact, but if it does mess with the audio, it's not enough for me to notice.

Well if you download and try EAC it may help to show where the fault lies.

My engineer has fixed the problem.  He did it last night when I was gone so I'm not exactly sure what he did.  I'll ask him on Monday and leave another reply so this question is answered in case anybody else comes across the same problem.

...and I'm wondering about "exact audio copy".  For years I have been using dbPoweramp and It's been great.  Incredibly simple and just does a great job of ripping and converting.  Would you guys reccomend "Exact Audio Copy" over dbPoweramp and if so why?  Also, is it a converter or just a CD ripper?

Well for a start, the full version is free - unlike with dbPoweramp. And also it uses a much more powerful multi-pass ripper that is incredibly accurate - and if it fails, it tells you exactly why. No, it's not just a ripper, and in many ways I think that it has even more extra features than dbPoweramp does (certainly as many) - full batch conversions, whatever. We know it's good - it's been good for a long time now. We started recommending it years ago for use with CE2000 and there are still good reasons for using it. It's worth having a look at the features page here to give yourself some sort of idea of how powerful it is. Really, I'd like to know what's not to recommend about it...

Oh, and did I mention that it's free?
