upgrade question please help

hello I am thinking about ugrading from 1.5 to 3.0 (huge step) but i just wanted to know what is the upgrading process what comes in the upgrade package do i need to know some type of serial number that i had for 1.5?

so if i dont know the serial numba for my 1.5 then i shouldnt buy the upgrade?
