I guess that's it, though I'm having a hard time understanding how it works. I've got three tracks, two of which have custom volume envelopes, one (vocal) that doesn't. The "READ" option is selected for each one and I can adjust the mid eq on all but the vocal track, which reverts to the previous setting on play. If I switch the vocal track setting to the "OFF" option I can adjust the eq fine. I'm guessing this is the correct option for adjusting eq on a track without custom envelopes. Thanks for the help. I'd really like to understand this better but the Adobe Help section on automation has me confused. Basically I want to adjust volume envelopes on two tracks and adjust eq on all three.

There are two ways to do what you want: Clip Envelopes, or Automation. Clip envelopes are drawn directly over the clip and can control volume and pan for a clip. Automation can control a LOT more than just volume and panning.....like eq, effects, sends...etc.
To use the Clip Envelopes you have to enable it in the "View" menu. You can choose to show or hide each of the envelopes, and then click and drag the envelope however you want.
EDIT: Clip envelopes belong to the clip! So if you use Clip Envelopes and then slide your clip around the track, then the envelopes stay with it. Automation Envelopes belong to the entire track. So if you automate volume on a track, and then move the clip that is on the track, then the automation would have to be rewritten to get it to line up again.
In Automation, you can click the little arrow to the left of the Automation Mode drop box to reveal the automation envelopes. The different Automation modes allow you to record changes you make to the track while the audio is playing back....Audition writes the envelopes for you. If you are using Write, Latch, or Touch modes then the changes you make will be recorded. "Read" mode will playback the automation, and any changes you make will revert back to the saved automation envelope. You will be able to see the faders move, and options turn on and off.
With the Automation Lanes shown (using the little arrow) you can add or delete lanes. The drop menu will allow you to see the options you can automate, and also will show you which options you've already automated (with an asterisk after the name). If you use the "x" button to delete an automation lane, the recorded envelope will still be followed! It will just hide the lane. You have to use the "Eraser" button to erase the recorded automation if you no longer want it, or want to start from scratch. Then there is the "Lock" button which will save the automation envelope from being altered.
The automation lane envelopes can also be clicked and dragged, just like Clip Envelopes. So you can edit recorded automation, or even create the envelope by hand.
A fun "trial" with automation is to start a new session (there doesn't have to be clips in it if you don't want).
-Bring down the automation lanes on a track by clicking the arrow
-Make sure the automation mode is set to "
write".
-Set the automation lane to "
Track Eq > Power On/Off", and switch to the EQ icon at the top of the main window so you can see the track eq.
-Press the play button and hit the Eq Power button on the track you are automating. You can turn it on and off however you like.
After you are done hit the stop button and the new envelope will be shown. The automation mode will switch to "Touch". "Touch" mode plays back the recorded automation, until you start changing the track settings....then the new automation is recorded. After you stop making changes to the track it will revert back to the recorded envelope settings.
To test this add another automation lane by clicking the plus sign. Make sure it says "Volume" and make sure it is still set to "Touch" mode. Press play and slowly drag down the volume knob. Once you are pretty low with the volume release the mouse and you will see the volume quickly increase until it is back to 0. When you press stop you will see the new envelope written.
Latch is similar to
Touch, but it does not return to the original envelope settings once you stop playing with the track options.
There is quite a LOT that you can do with automation. But I believe it is worth spending some time testing out the different options and how they operate.
