Hello all!  I'm a newb here.  I mean as far as registering, I have viewed here quite a bit.  So here's my first question.

Anybody know anything about any issues I would have with the Academic version of AA 3?

I can get it for $145.  I don't so any commercial stuff.  It's all hobby.  My own band, friends bands, thats about it.  So I would conform to the terms.  But....would I sacrifice any support?  Or upgrades?

Thanks for any feedback.

You don't say if you are an academic?  Do you meet the criteria shown here - http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=25f26dd&sliceId=1#qualifies ?  If not, then you're going to have to pay like the rest of us.

Ha! I'm sorry.  Yea, that looked bad didn't it.

Yes, I am going to school for my apprenticeship in Electrical and Instrumentation at the Tech College in Green Bay.  I was just concerned about the usage.  And I read as long as it's not commercial (which I'm guessing means a business/making money), just personal.

I have used CEP for a long time.  It was given to me years back by a friend that went into other software for his projects.  So I am used to it.  I like it very much.  I currently use a Layla 20 and a Yamaha mixer for my hardware.  But I wanted something a little newer for software recording.  I was looking into Reaper just because of the price.  But then I saw that I could get the new Adobe at a good price for being enrolled at the college.  I just don't want any deals where there's no support if I have an issue.  Or maybe you install it once and thats it.  It wont work if you have to reformat or something.  I had an issue with a Microsoft Academic edition of Office or windows.  I can't remember which.

Sorry about that - but I did have to ask the question.  A lot of people seem to think they can get one of these without being anything other than poor Smiley .

I honestly don't know the answer to this, I guess you'll have to ask Adobe directly, since I don't think there is anyone here running this version.

I think the answer will be that it is exactly the same as the normal version and will have the same support etc., but don't quote me on that.

With a bit of luck, you'll never need Adobe support - which is not exactly on the ball, in my opinion.  As a CEP user, you'll recognise quite a lot of AA, although the multitrack is somewht different.

As memory serves me, one or maybe two features are omitted from the Academic edition, to justify the price difference (or not...) - trouble is, I couldn't tell you.  I suspect if you asked the question on Adobe's official Audition forum, an official answer might be forthcoming (though I'd be surprised if there was no info on the matter at point of sale at the Adobe shop site).

Well, I did call Adobe customer service.  The person said there is NO difference.  I asked him probably 2-3 times about any support or features not included.  He said they are EXACTLY the same.  So I think I'll spring for it.  I am too used to the editing features of CEP and I liked the AA demo's I tried.

I was playing around with Reaper a little bit but, too much routing capabilities that I don't need and not enough editing features.  However I liked how resource friendly and cheap it was.

But the thing I LOVED about CEP/AA was how well I could clean up my old 4-track multi-track session after I dumped it on the PC.  VERY nice noise reduction features.  AA/CEP just has the old "tape studio" feel.  I'm not in MIDI at all.  Don't even know how to use it.  I just hook up my mic's and hit record.  So, thanks for the input.  I'll probably frequent these forums much more now that I know about it.

I have a college student doing a little internship with me right now who just got Adobe "approval" for academic pricing, and we expect our boxes, etc, to be identical.  Too bad I can't confirm this yet!  There's really a good-faith agreement here that you'll only use it for non-commercial purposes, otherwise no difference other than $.

The slightly different features of the academic version to which Ozpeter referred to dated back to the download-only days, if my memory is correct, and it makes sense that Adobe wouldn't be bothered with a completely unique version now that there's a dual-delivery system.

I don't think you'll regret this, guitarman -- for the money that is an unbelievable deal, and every day I use 3.0 I enjoy its greater ease and amazing powers.

Hi. Noncommercial use = Having a band - playing out / recording w/o any expectation of financial reward. If you record a demo and put your songs on My Space, I'm sure you know you can sell your songs easily. Isn't that commercial use? I'm sure what they mean by academic use is your being a student attending school full-time to qualify for the special academic price break. Academic use doesn't cut off commercial possibilities from your creativity. It opens doors.

I think that I agree entirely with this interpretation - it's not anti-commercial, it's pro-encouragement.

Well, I made the purchase last night.  I think I will be very pleased.

Yeah the projects I do right now, aren't even a consider for selling.  Right now the metalcore project I'm doing with a friend of mine can't be even played out just because there's 3 of us doing 5 instruments.  More of a project band.  Not that that means it CAN'T be sold, but...it's all for fun.

Then my girlfriend is a vocalist so she wanted to do some acoustic Christmas songs.  That would just be a "pass around to family members".

And I do agree that it's probably not so much the anti-commercial thing as much as just an opportunity for students.  And the philosophy does work.  As this hobby does not bring in money, I would probably never spend $349 for the full version.  I would either keep CEP or use an open-source one.  So, I do agree with the "pro-encouragement".  Great way to put it.
