.....so it comes as a some surprise to discover people are reluctant to explore the latest thing (you seem to be acting out of character is what I'm saying) .. drivers not available notwithstanding.

I'd say we were acting entirely in character. . . I'm actually surprised that you are not being more conservative, since you fall into the 'professional' bracket.

I still think my observation is a truism. If being 'conservative' means being overly and perhaps even unnecessarily cautious then I'm right to criticise us. The only thing holding us back from upgrading is simply not being able to because of unavailable drivers .. to overdramatise and exhaggerate this situation falls into my description above. The "I wouldn't touch Vista in a million years" type of sentiment is simply stupid. rolleyes

I've noticed that the remaining XP systems in the shops are going cheap - now is the time to buy!

My past experience with Microsoft has been to wait until ALL the "dust" has cleared...Worst experience was upgrading from Win98SE to Windows Millenium/2000...

Just a little OT note: Millenium and 2000 were very different systems. Me was the last of the DOS-based line, basically 98 with some things addeded and some removed. 2000 belongs to the NT line. Both lines kind of merged in XP, which took the stable engine from NT/2000 and the user friendliness of the 98/Me line.

I saw a thourough comparison of Vista and XP peformance recently. Though Vista, as far as i remeber, ran without the resource-consuming Aero interface, its performance was, depending on the program and test, lower or equal to (including marginally better, 1% change is close to nothing) XP.  That's something that I predicted, but it was good to see the confirmation.

I also recall reading that Vista's audio system has been changed in comparison to the previous ones in such way, that one can independently control volume of each program from an equivalent of Windows Mixer. is this true?

This on the surface Oz sounds good but me? well I'm not too sure! What about upgrade paths when they come about? Unless the next versions of upgraded software are dedicated to Vista only, it may be a while before getting back into upgrade paths. (I have chiefly Photoshop in mind)
Any ideas?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6407419.stm makes salutory reading - not that one person's experience is likely to be everybody's but it does reinforce the view that it's best not to jump yet unless there's a good reason so to do.

Hey all,

Speaking purely as a civilian and Audition 2.0 user at home, here's my personal experience and opinion on using it under Vista.

First, the new audio driver is extremely wonky.  It seems to configure most device input channels as separate devices, so things can appear very weird within the WDM drivers.  Some devices just list each channel separately, but with no matched pairs, others don't show up as having any input channels at all.  The M-Audio MobilePre and one of the Edirol's can't record under any application I've tried.

Most devices do not have ASIO drivers out for Vista yet.  Those that do have Vista-specific drivers tend to be working well.

All of this, of course, doesn't matter if you have the Aero interface enabled.  The thing is an amazing CPU hog.  Setting it to the Vista Basic interface is another world in performance.  I think the biggest mistake Microsoft made with Vista was putting a CPU meter in the sidebar that pegs to 100% every time you mouse over the sidebar.  tongue

So, all-in-all, if your soundcard works with Vista, then Audition 2.0 runs very well with Aero disabled.  But it can be a real pain to get to that point.  It would definitely be worth waiting for awhile until ASIO drivers are available for your device.

Hmm... if that's not enough to put you off for the time being - well, it should be!

Well I've got a Vista and quite frankly at this point in time it was a waste of time and money to consider using it for a DAW. The biggest drawback is soundcard drivers for my M-Audio sound cards....they'are not available at the time of this post.
Another big phooey goes to Microsoft for messing up the S/PDIF with DRM stuff.....I use the S/PDIF for my input into Audition for recording, and now it's goofed up in Vista.

So all in all, Vista is a big waste of time and money for me to use as a DAW. Back to XP for now.

Yes, I've heard about a few more problems with wav files as well that effectively preclude its use as a DAW OS.
