Welcome to the forum djbutter22.

I think the feel of the ad works, despite the fact that you have to promote different music styles, dance and country.

Your mic EQ could sound a lot better. Pull back on the bass to about a third what you have it now. Bring the mid to about twice what you have it now. Then put your headphones on the desk/table and listen. Is your voice clear? If you have to put your headphones on to make it all out, it's not clear enough  wink

I must agree with Bernie.  Not so much about his suggested correction for EQ, but simply the fact that it needs correction.

Your voice is SOOO overshadowed by the music.  It needs to be crisp and clean, like the music, but your voice needs to be BIGGER than the music.

Bernie has one of the best-sounding mic chains I know of.  I'm sure he'd be glad to share some, if you ask nice.  Listen to his processing, then go after that sound.

If they client approves, its good to go but it really wasn't good enough for air...

* Your read was too fast and not good
* There were too many elements and effects that took away from the message...folks these are ads and promos...they serve a purpose and that purpose is NOT to throw as many effects at the computer to make it sound "hip"
* What's with the all night long cut at the end? Thank goodness its at the end of the spot cause it stops any momentum you might have created cold.

Effects catch the listeners ear but the content (copy) keeps the attention...you are there to sell a product or service...you can still make it exciting but you need to make it understandable too. This spot didn't do that.

I think the pace of the read is fine, just you could enunciate better.  It's a nit pick, but the underlying music is a bit loud...and the stutter effect is very cliche.

However, the general concept is good.

Thanks for the reply and all of the constructive feedback. I wasn't very happy with this spot at all, but the club owner called and gave me about an hour to get it ready for the radio. I am quite new when it comes to making radio spots with AA. I mainly use it to make DJ drops for our club. I would love any assistance or guidance on which settings to use and which effects to not use. I haven't heard samples from all of you but I have listened to Marty's and if most of you are on the same level as him, then I know I getting the bes advice out there!

A lot of inspiration comes from listening to the work of others, and a lot of creativity comes from trying out the DX and VST plugins, and indeed experimenting with the plgins that come in Audition.

Most effects work when they are short, just one word or phrase for example. The purpose is to make a statement or word, name stand out, like making a line of text italic or bold; if you made all the text italic or bold or 3D then it doesn't work as an effect, but if you make the heading or the logo 3D then that is a deliberate standout effect. This is how effects are used in radio imaging anyway. If you're making a movie and you want to place a person in a cave or a church, then all of his dialogue will be echoed. This is a different use of effects. Radio imaging has become like a showcase of 3 or 4 different effects, the attitude is grunge, it's a mashup, like you're screwing up the boring old straight read as badly as possible to sound rebellious, and therefore cool for young people.

It's also clever if you match the effects to what is being said, for example:

HAPPY FM (effect: a repeating stutter on the 'H' in happy)
PLAYS TODAY'S BIGGEST HITS (effect: big reverb or stretch effect on the word 'biggest')
AND THE GREATEST MEMORIES (effect: an old AM radio/telephone effect on this statement)

....amd wooshes and zaps between each statement!

These are just obvious and common effects, and the above only lasts about 3 seconds! The pieces are made seprately and then you get some beats and beatmatch the pieces. Masters of this type of production like Emmet and Marty have developed some really crazy-sounding creativity like this over the years, and it's very impressive. YOU have to experiment and experiment .. and post some here  wink

I'll try getting some pluggins and playing around with them.  It would be nice if AA would simplify the beatmatching process. I know this has been said in millions of posts so I won/t harp on it. It would just be nice to be able to set everything at the BPM's you want. I use Reason to make beats and they have it like that. Oh well, maybe some future versions will be easier to use as far as beamatching goes. We'll see.!

Actually it would be detrimental to you to have the software beatmatch it for you, it would be much better experience for you to do it manually, especially in such short pieces of work. By placing and moving the pieces around you will get further inspired. This is the art of radio production.
