There needs to be a button that lets you ping your hardware to determine optimum record and playback latencies.

I use a SoundBlaster 5.1 for all playback/monitoring. I've never experienced any latencey issues until I tried the Audition Mix monitoring selection in the Session Properties panel. There was a significant delay when dubbing. I switched back to extenal monitoring and selected the SB 5.1 for my outputs. No more delay.
I did have to update to ASIO drivers... This was critical to get things going.

Is there a disadvantage to doing things this way?

According to the "readme" file for AA2.0 there are problems with the Creative ASIO drivers.  Maybe this is what you are experiencing.

Could be. But as long as I am using the External option, I'm not having a problem. I didn't update the SB driver... does ASIO4All make that unnecessary?
