I wonder who came with this new function, and what it is good for.

I use Audition to make composition notes often and i dont even save any session file, cause i dont need them. I like to record some guitar, maybe some vocal, or just huming and then create mixdown and save the idea. They may never even end up a complete song, so there's no need to save any sessions.
This has been this prgram's good option since the CEP 1.0, i dont get it why fix it if it aint broken.
I think it would be same if in photo editing program you'd click your photo with a tool and the program asks you to save the session.

Could there be a preference to change this?

No, I don't think that there could be. This is a fundamental change to the way Audition works, and it's been requested by a lot of people. It's much safer the way it is now, because if you do want to keep something, you don't lose the lot if power fails during a save of the temporary files.

I think that the majority of people would say it was 'broken', in this context.

Since you still presumably have the previous version, you can always go on using this, of course...

Direct to disk recording...which is what we have now....was probably one of the most asked for new features for those of us who use AA for tracking.

Previously it was necessary to spend time saving each recorded track (which only went to a temp file) after every recording.  As I can record up to 16 tracks at a time, this was a major time waster!

I can see that the need to assign a name before you start doesn't fit your personal workflow, but just wanted to explain the thinking behind the new system (and why so many of us are jumping for joy at the change).

Edit:  Steve got in just before me while I was waxing lyrical!

WWW

Agreed - I am cheering the change and looking forward to give the new recording setup a lengthy challenge.

You can use my double-patented method if you like:

When I'm just goofing around with something I doubt will go anywhere, I just let it save it as the default \My Music\Untitled.ses  I think I've got it down to under a second now.  All the track files will get written to \My Music\Untitled_Recorded\  which makes it easy to wipe everything out when it's time.

[edited to correct a poor grammatical choice.]
