I hope somebody knows how to help me! I've recorded a basic rock band, vox, guitar, bass, drums..., I've got all the pro EQ's, used a wicked tape simulator, everything sounds good but......!
I just can't get that studio sound where you can HEAR EVERYTHING. I'm so close though!
I was wondering about...
Stereo Expansion: Why the HELL does it seem to only make my guitar louder when I apply Cool Edit's 'Mastering Width' to my final mix in the Pan/Expander? Is this something that needs to be done to each individual instrument first then stuck together? If so, does anybody have a formula for each instrument that they could lend me?
Maximizing volume: Do I need to set a maximum threshold of each instrument first, then clump it together?
I can't think of any other way to make clarity and space, like I said, I've already got the right EQ's, I've used reverb in the right spots, maybe there's something simple I'm missing? Any help is greatly appreciated.

My personal opinion (not that it matters to anyone) is.... a good mix won't require alot of "mastering". "Hearing everything" can be managed with panning, volume and E.Q.. There are a many a "school of thought" pertaining to this matter. Check out... www.studiocovers.com (one of my fav's) and have a good read. The articles won't "mix" your project for you, but hopefully can help you to understand some of the processes involved.

There is a slightly quicker alternative to trawling through VooDoo's Univeral Elixir (good though it is...)
If you look on 'Bunch of questions', you will find on it the 'String Line Mix Primer', which basically explains the way in which this works. And you only have to scroll down the page...

Maybe your problem is a bit too much of everything. I'd be surprised if others haven't found themselves in exactly the same position as you are now in - I know I've been there.
My advice is to start again with the basic tracks, develop the mix as well as you can without all the fancy EQ, tape simulation, etc., etc. and then listen very objectively to what is going on before adding in the other things - you may well find that you don't really need them as much as you thought you did.

Try mixing again with NO COMPRESSION on guitars or bass or vocals.
If you tracked with compression then you have a real problem.
Start with the drums.. then bass then guitars.. when you add a track listen to how it affects the other sounds.. Eq with this thought in mind..
Think of mixing as a long balloon. If you squeeze one end it affects the other. NOTHING can be mixed without considering the total sound.
Get the mix as good as you can then compress ONLY the sounds that are uncontrolled or lacking focus. Too much compression of tracks will kill a mix better than a coffee down the slider slot so think minimal till you know HOW to abuse the tools of trade ]:}
(This is GENERAL ADVISE for novices.)

I don't know.... I once took a full Bud light, "down the slider slot" on a brand new Mackie console. Sounds like "good advise" for anyone smart enough to heed.

Hahahahah... maybe we should start a thread.. "stupid things I have done to my equipment"
here's mine.... I once mixed a song with the ADAT set on the wrong bit rate.... still think it sounded better at wrong speed though

Actually, not that long ago there was a thread that drifted "off topic" to... "stupid things I have done (not exclusive to equipment). I contributed a couple of my "more choice morsels" such as; recording a female vocalist with a new mic only to discover I had put the mic up backwards..... and, back in my performing/touring days, breaking my thumb (another story in itself) and having to superglue a pick between the broke thumb and index finger to get through the last couple of days of the leg.
