Audition Won't Read CD Audio
If the problem only applies to 'user' accounts under Windows XP and not to the Administrator account, this is often due to Audition relying on SPTI support (within Windows XP) to rip files from CD media (which is controlled by the "local security policy").
To fix this, enable Windows XP policy within the "Microsoft Management Console" (MMC) to allow CD-ROM access
Below are steps to change the security policy that controls CDRom access
1. Log on as Administrator
2. Go to Start > Run and type "mmc" and click OK
3. Click File > Add/Remove Snap-In
4. Click the Add Button
5. Select "Group Policy" and click Add, then click Finish, Close, and then OK.
6. In "Console Root" click the + next to "Local Computer Policy", followed by "Computer Configuration>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>Security Options.
7. With Security Options selected, on the right side of the window, scroll down until you find "Devices Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only" Double click on it.
8. Choose Enable (should be disabled by default)
9. Close MMC (no need to save - the policy has been appended to the current policy)
10. Log out of all accounts that may be open (don't use the "Switch users" feature).
11. Log back on as limited user and proceed to rip CD audio in Audition.
Some Background info:
By default Audition relies on the Microsoft SPTI support (within Windows XP) to rip files from CD media. This service is dependent on the local security policy defined within Windows XP. If the limited user accounts created on the system are based on the default policy, this particular policy (when disabled) will restrict CDrom access.
