This short clip is from a 1977 LP titled Deep Voices, the track titled Deep Voices. It is supposed to be a blue whale, recorded with a hydrophone. Except for the cutoff right above 19kHz, the mp3 seems to be a good approximation of my LP transfer.

The primary feature seems to be a 37Hz tone but there are a great many full frequency range spikes. Any one of these by themselves would immediately full under suspicion of being a smeared click, but there are so many, with some significant regularity in occurrence, that it is hard to conclude that they don’t belong there.

Does anyone know, do such sounds actually come from whales, or do I just have a vinyl defect I’ve never seen before?

I'm happy to be corrected but I suspect that it is the natural sound of the Southern Right whale.  As I understand it this is common usually around mating time.

Right whales snoring are supposed to appear later on the album. I suppose someone could have put the tracks in the wrong order. The important thing is that I apparently should not try to edit out those strange full frequency range spikes.

Why would you even a) be listening to the album b) be even thinking about editing these things out?

Do you have a day job ?  grin
