Method use in Spectral Frequency in Adobe Audion ?

This is an education question... but I can't answer when my teacher ask me.
I'm using Spectral Frequency to see noise frequency... it's very simple. but what happen in it? I know alot of DSP, which method using in Adobe Audion 3.0. I want more detail as possible.
Please help me.
