Are AMD Athlox XP 2600+ or AMD Sempron 2400+ processors equipped with SSE-2 (which I've never heard of before)?
No they are not.

Re: 3.0's shipping in two months
Now let me get this straight, SSE and SSE-2 are two different things ??
SSE is a requirement of AA2.0 and SSE-2 is a requirement of AA3..
So even though AA 2.0 works on my computer AA 3 will not ??
and my Athlon 2500XP chip will or will not work with AA3 ...
??

Re: 3.0's shipping in two months
So I downloaded the utility that Hart's site had a link to, and checked my chip's capabilities. it said that SSE was supported but SSE-2 and SSE-3 are not.....soooooo
it looks like I'll need to upgrade my chip, sooo any recommendations without having to change the motherboard as well ??

As I said on the Adobe Forums, Wayne, they can't support AMD stuff because of affiliation. They are mentioning the SSE aspect of things because of the chipsets and you wont get an Intel to work on AMD boards without major soldering. Wayne, I've noticed your posts regarding this and I'm not playing down the capabilities of AMD M/C's by any stretch of the imagination but Adobe's products won't be engineered to work on AMD platforms, irrespective of them being tested on them.
Also, if you buy an Adobe product and it doesn't work on an AMD M/C you can cause any action, 'cos it doesn't say they work on AMD components. You really should buy/create an Intel based M/C

Re: 3.0's shipping in two months
The SSE-2 issue is primarily needed for performance with the video features. I believe, but don't have a machine handy to verify at this minute, that both 2.0 and 3.0 will launch and run just fine without SSE-2, though you'll get a warning dialog during installation. If, however, you plan to use Audition for video work, and not just audio, SSE-2 will make things MUCH more enjoyable. As in entirely more enjoyable.
SSE is just an enhanced set of assembler instructions the chipset supports natively, that speed up multimedia routines. SSE-2 and SSE-3 each added a few additional commands to the list.
Now, this was the case for 2.0. I can't say for certain that 3.0 doesn't force SSE-2, but I don't think it does. I'll try to install it on one of my older machines at home and let you know what happens.

Hmmm that changes things, as I'm only work with audio and midi, no video.
Thanks for the info !!
I'll have to talk with my computer guru about putting together an Intel system then.

Re: 3.0's shipping in two months
As far as SSE versions on Intel processors are concerned, the P III's ran SSE, and anything from a P4 onwards runs SSE-2. As far as it goes, it's the accelerated instruction set, and the -2 version adds a few instructions to it beyond those in the original set.
I seem to recall from somewhere that not only is it significant in terms of video processing, but it also makes a difference to the speed that FFTs are calculated at - which potentially affects the performance of quite a few effects.

In 2003, AMD added support for SSE2 in their Opteron and Athlon 64 CPUs.

Re: 3.0's shipping in two months
I can't directly check this now, but I know that I had to retire my Athlon XP 2800 machine from front-line audio when AA 2.0 came out, and that it was because of the SSE/2 issue. I still use it with AA 1.5 very happily, and it also fronts my 2 usb HD's for backup. I just try to do occasional bits of video, but my (always unreliable) memory was that AA 2.0 refused to install on that processor. For AA 2.0, I added a Celeron 2.8 machine to the line-up, having pounced on a very cheap offer of processor and motherboard and re-used an old case etc.
I used the opportunity to have two machines, one with unbalanced i/o and the other balanced, so that I could easily interface with all the other
junk
audio gear here.
I believe that later processors than the XP series from AMD do all support SSE2, and certainly my AMD dual core Turion laptop runs AA 2.0 and Premiere Elements fine when I put the Windows XP (as opposed to Vista) drive back in.
If it were me, I'd try to snap up another PC quickly before it becomes impossible to get machines with Windos XP installed.

Soundbooth does, and I bet there is code in common now.

Then we should be lucky enough to get an authoritative answer soon

Re: 3.0's shipping in two months
I talked with my computer guru, showed him the system requirements for AA3, and he says I need to save up for a whole new computer, mine is becoming dated, and the new one would be better. So we're talking about Intel chip, motherboard, new memory 2gig minimum, case, power supply, video card, I could probably use my 200 gig hard drives....but I should be looking to build a new computer rather than buy a complete package computer, so I can upgrade that if necessary. So it looks like I'll have two computers, one for Windows XP and one for Vista, the XP one for music production and the old computer with Vista for internet. Until my M-Audio sound cards get Vista compatible drivers, I have to stay with XP for music production.
He's guessing $800-1,000.

I talked with my computer guru,
So did I, which was easy, 'cos it's me...
I was planning a new machine in the new year; I can't load the whole of some of my organs into Hauptwerk in my present system, and I've had some teeny niggles about possible data corruption - apparently dealt with, but I'm not feeling relaxed about it. So I've decided I'm going to upgrade now, and then the server in my loft will get a nice upgrade from the left-overs.
In the ten years I have been assembling PC systems, whether for myself or at work, this will be only the second time I have built one using an Intel processor - because with the unveiling of the Core2 Duo processors they have become clearly the best value available for the first time in a decade. (The first time was a dual-processor machine, which only Intel's Pentium-III could support at that time; that machine was built for audio editing, using CoolEdit 2000.)
