My problem isn't the two months I have to wait; my problem's my ignorance.  I don't know hardly anything about 2.0, so how can I judge whether 3.0 is significantly better?  Piddle.

Whatcha think?

I don't think - I know. But unfortunately, I can't give you details - I can't go beyond what's been made public. What I can say though is that I pretty much agree with everything it says in the release note, and that the improvements are well worth it. I do have a couple of favourites, and as far as I'm concerned, they make the whole thing worth it, just for them alone.

Yes, they are both in the list, but I have to say that there are plenty of other small enhancements that aren't mentioned as well - you've only got the highlights there.

If you want my candid opinion, 3.0 is what 2.0 should  have been...

That (plus a question I had that Ozpeter answered about the upgrade price applying to *any* previous version) has decided me.  Thanks, Mr Steve.

Okay, done.  Gee, this is exciting.  I hope the interface is similar to 2.0, cuz I really like working with it.

You do realize, Steve, that this will mean starting a new forum.  cool

I'm more than a just a little excited about this new version - I optimistically hope that my enthusiasm will pay off this time  grin

Grr!  Just like SoundBooth, they've now made SSE-2 a requirement.  That means I won't be able to run it on my main tolerably fast AMD Athlon 2800+ desktop, only on my much slower 1.2GHz Pentium-M laptop!

Of course, I know that my next machine can't avoid having SSE-2, but I don't like the feeling of being bounced into it when my current machine is perfectly adequate.  No other audio programs have done this to me yet.

I note that a lot of the features I like WaveLab for are appearing in this update; but I'm surprised that there's no sign of any improvement to the CD burning facilities, which frankly suck in comparison to WaveLab's.

As for the UK pricing...  Adobe have long been well known to be the worst offenders in the industry in this regard - but there appears to be no way to embarrass them enough to make a difference.  More grr!

WOW I've been away from here for a while! Anyway, I just placed my pre-order for 3.0 and I must say the upgrade price was a real kicker $99 bucks is much cheaper than what the upgrade price was for 2.0. Now to let the station know there's a newer version on the horizon maybe they'll upgrade there too. I wonder if it will work on my laptop which is a AMD Athlon 64 based processor. My desktop (main machine) is a P4 HT 3.2GHz so I think it will work on it (I hope). Anyone know the details if it will work on my machines? Thanks!

Yes, the management is aware of that - just as we were last time. What hasn't been decided yet is how to keep the entire forum structure from becoming unmanageably large - but we are working on it.

Oh, and incidentally, when I said "If you want my candid opinion, 3.0 is what 2.0 should  have been..." I should also have said that I'm going to expand on that a little - but only when it's released, for obvious reasons.

its about time, although maybe too late. I must say that Reaper has done everything that I need from a multi track recording perspective. I do find myself opening AA for audio editing once in a while although its lack of support for 24 bit format has caused issues with Melodyne Uno but that's Uno's issue as well. Anyhow, I started with AA but was driven to Reaper due to AA's lack of VSTi support. Since then I have found myself very impressed with Reaper. Reaper has just released an impressive 2.0 beta release and its cost is half of the upgrade cost for AA.

I dished out the $99.00 for the upgrade , more because I don't want to loose my investment in AA and it does seem that the feature set finally provides a comprehensive starting point to do everything that I need to do. I do need to be blown away tho because if it does not at least do certain things way better than Reaper I just don't see how I can justify upgrading to 3.x or 4.0.

SSE-2 (meaning: use Intel CPU) is also a requirement for AA2, which runs perfectly fine on my AMD boxes. I'm sure it runs ok on your AMD desktop too.

No*.  AA 2 (like lots of other programs) requires SSE, which socket-A Athlons provide.  The Adobe programs will both now require SSE-2, which the socket-A Athlons are the last processors not to have.  I just think it's a year too early to be forcing the issue; I may have bought almost the last socket-A motherboard ever, but it's less then two years old.

At work, I replace the desktops at 4-5 years of age.

Until I see AA3 on my platform, I will reserve judgement. (Wait for the demo version?)   AA2 proved to be waste of time, and didn't persuade me to use it instead of Sound Forge 8 or WaveLab (and eventually REAPER).  AA2 was bloatware, with that ridiculously large file size and no evidence of speed optimisation in the rewrite of the platform.   REAPER, by contrast appears to be written in the spirit of the old Apple II programmers who knew how to write tight code in assembler to fit into 64K of memory.  2.5MB and 10% processor load for 8 tracks ... show me how AA3 is better!

Lots of new features is fine, but like PABXs which have hundreds of features but 99% of users only use enquiry, divert and call waiting, what really counts is better speed and RELIABILITY in the three or four operations that we use for 99% of the work.  Tell me how AA3 achieves that and I'll be happy to upgrade.

As they said a while back, "where's the beef?"

I hear what you are saying but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and as I said I pre-ordered AA 3.0, too much of an investment not to i.e. I had purchased 1.0, then 1.5 then 2.0. I think AA's audio editing is great. I have my doubts as to whether it will blow away Reaper in multi-track recording  , my gut feeling is that if they  keep the $100.00 upgrade fees , that I will just stick with what I have i.e. 3.0 is probably the end of the line for me, unless they do something so fantastically over the top mind blowing great.

I've been playing with the AA2 trial version for the last couple of weeks, and it's faster than previous versions because of the direct to file feature which is a biggie for me.  I agree about the unnecessarily large file size (why not make the loops optional/downloadable?), and I agree that Reaper presents the biggest serious challenge to every audio software in the field - it's small, good, cheap and getting better daily.

I'm going to continue with Audition because I like it better than previous versions I've used and because I'm familiar with it.  I'm going to continue with Reaper (I got it months ago) as well because I'm interested in supporting the little guy (especially when the little guy is doing such good work) and having a real alternative to compare to.

Opteron and Athlon 64  64-bit CPUs have supported SSE2 since 03

(writing that of course from my newest machine a 5 yr old laptop, though since SSE2 as been around since 01 I can theoretically run AA2 (or 3) on it.)

Are AMD Athlox XP 2600+ or AMD Sempron 2400+ processors equipped with SSE-2 (which I've never heard of before)?
