A friend of mine has taken some instructional notes and recorded them on his phone. 

He saved them as .amr files.    Imported the files to AA 2.0   

Can't play them.  Anyone have ideas on how open the files, play them, etc.?

I don't think you are going to be able to do this direct in Audition. 

However, there are some AMR converter softwares around.  For example, the Allok MP3 to AMR Converter 2.0.2 will convert your .amr files to a wide selection of other audio format, that Audition can handle.  You can find this at http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Authors/Allok_Soft.html .
