I have 2 robust PCs, side by side, both running AA 2.0  How can I take all the FAVORITES I created (and worked hard on!) and
move them to the second PC?  Is there any way to do this?

Thank you,

FD

Here's a clue - read the contents of this thread.

Bear in mind that if you copy your originals, and replace the appropriate .xml files in the new version, you will lose anything/everything you've done to the new one already - and there's precious little, verging on nothing, that you can do about that. But if you just want to clone the systems, then copying and replacing the files mentioned in the link will do it.

Does that folder also contain the settings information for third-party plugins you use in AA or just Adobe Audition settings?

It certainly contains the names of presets you create in the VST effects settings xml file, but as to exactly where all the preset information is, I wouldn't be absolutely sure without a careful check. Since the name is stored though, it's very likely that the parameters will be too - but they aren't in the same place as the preset name, that's for sure - otherwise the entries would look the same as internal effects entries, and they don't. But it makes sense that they are stored locally - VST effects can be automated, and to do this, all of the parameters have to be available, and changes capable of being stored.

But it's important to note that if you are going to transfer settings, and those settings involve external VST effects, that the effects had better be installed in exactly the same directory structure in the new machine, otherwise all bets are off, considering the erm, 'vulnerable' state of the .xml settings...

What I had in mind was preparation to switch to Vista .. I don't suppose we know yet whether the folder structure is the same .. or do we?

Anybody running AA2.0 under Vista only has themselves to blame for whatever happens, as it's specifically not supported. Apparently even software that is supported doesn't run properly (Cubase). But there is no reason to suppose that the part of the folder structure necessary to support the user information has inherently changed, no. But there is a huge caveat - and that is that other settings related to this structure may well not function the way they are supposed to - and the early adopters (aka suicide junkies) have definitely run into problems.

It might be worth knowing that the "Documents and Settings" folder is not the same in Vista as in XP. In some ways it seems to be replaced by a Users folder, but I'm not that much of a suicide junky that I've made time to look at how this affects anything, or how it is all meant to work. Too many other questions to be answered first......
I've had some problems with installations of odd programs, where things are hard coded to directories.

All I can say is that many error messages in Vista that relate to (missing) directories and other things are very misleading.

The "x:\documents and settings" folder from XP is changed to "x:\users". For compatability reasons with "old" software, Vista does a redirect from the old folder naming convention to the new one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_profile); as Wildduck and others have noticed, this is no guarantee that the "old" s/w is functioning correctly.

Check this forum and others for horror stories on the use of Vista with non-compatible (audio) s/w.

I'm just getting tired of waiting to put Vista on! I have a laptop with XP on if I run into problems with Vista .. I suppose we can look forward to a few years of "Now Vista Compatible!" all over the place, as software and everything else catches up to Vista?

Sorry that sounds almost like an oxymoron like "military intelligence". I didn't know you could catch up to something that seems to be several steps backwards
