AA and Win64
sorry, if this is a stale subject , searched for Win 64 got some hits on Vista which I don't want to move into yet. However, a guy on the Reaper forum gets excellent performance and stability on 64 bit so I was wondering what the scoop now is on using 64 bit wtih AA, will it run just as well under the 32 bit thunking/emulation. My DAC , Edirol FA-101, already has 64 bit drivers

I really can't see any point in doing this unless Audition was specifically written to take advantage of a 64 bit operating system. Sonar is about the only program that had a version designed to run under Win64 so it might be worth searching their forums for opinions.

According to Durin Gleaves, Audition will run under Vista but not with the Aero style desktop. It shuts "Aero" down but if you close Audition, the interface will be restored. This isn't too bad but the problem with drivers still remains and their stability. Certainly if you have a kind of Vista compatable redundant M/C would help in this domain.
James is closer to the mark but again it's your soundcard drivers which are MORE important. Audition apparantly runs on Vista but more importantly is NOT at the moment supported. Things to remember

I may be confused but I believe that Reaper does take advantage of 64 bit i.e. from what I have bumped into in their forum.

Re: AA and Win64
Don't confuse 64bit processing with working as a true 64bit program in a 64 bit address space. 64bit processing has been available for many years and, hopefully, most audio programs will use it (or a fixed point alternative) internally.

Re: AA and Win64
I recall asking Hart Shafer about AA2.0 and 64 bit Windoze, and he replied that Audition had not been written for the 64 bit OS. From memory, he said it would RUN on a 64 bit OS, but it would effectively be a 32 bit app emulated to run under 64 bit.
I'm not a programmer, so forgive me if I've mangled the definition.

Re: AA and Win64
no mangling done
this confirms that it runs emulated, now what I think Reaper does is that it if in 64 bit it knows how to do some/all math in 64 bit, but I believe it runs emulated as well. The other issue is what about all the VSTs ? Will they run emulated as well. Does emulated mean slower necessarily especially in a modern context.
I'm holding off. The only compelling reason to go Win64 is to use 4 gig ram.

Charles - you are still confusing two separate things here. 64 bit operating systems get their name from the amount of address space that they can access. This has absolutely nothing to do with the resolution of the math. So-called 32 bit programs (which are called 32 bit because they can only access 32 bits worth of address space) have used 64bit math for many years.

James is quite right - when they talk about emulating 64 bit in 32 bit, it means there is a routine that converts the 32 bit addresses into 64 bit and back again so the machine doesn't crash - that's all. And because there is an extra routine it
has
to be slower, though not necessarily by very much
