I have upgraded my soundcard from a soundblaster to a firestudio (big jump)
with the soundblaster the mixer let me control the recording level and the monitor level
of the recorded source separately
I can't seem to do this with the firestudio I don't know if its done in AA the firestudio or in the windows mixer
anybody know?

It will all be controlled by the Firestudio's Console software. Audition just gets what's fed from the soundcard although internal monitoring should work in multitrack view. The Windows mixer no longer has any bearing on your sound. It is only for lowcost soundcards that don't have their own software and onboard sound chips.
