I should point out that all that stuff about room EQ is
entirely
the wrong way to go about improving the reproduction properties of a room. What it will achieve is a result
only
in the position that the mic is - move a little (sometimes only a few inches) and the results in your room will be worse than with no room EQ. Somehow they seem to have, erm, neglected to mention that... and all that stuff about loudness compensation means that for any form of monitoring, you'd want the whole shebang turned firmly OFF - simply because you won't be hearing what you've actually got at all.
You fix a problem with a room by fixing the
room
, not what's reproduced in it. You fix loudness issues by being aware of them on a linear system, and compensating your mix accordingly. Their room compensator should come with a headclamp, and their loudness compensation simply isn't for the likes of
anybody
who wants to hear what's actually there.

Its for all those people who believe the little boxes that came with their computer make the best sound they've ever heard. I've talked to a few such.

Not sure any of this is the way I want to go. I fired up the machine that had Vista loaded on it which I'd stopped running because it wouldn't let me load AVG AV.
Read a document which said it was a problem which MS have now cured in Vista. Ran the auto-update. Re-started the machine, and got a message that Vista now requires more memory to run at all.
The machine 'only' has 384megs. So I gave up and tried to load from a SUSE Linux 'live', but that said it required 512megs and refused to run.
The DAWs with their larger memory will run SUSE off the DVD, but it's pretty slow.
I get the feeling that Vista looks like Linux, is quite slow to start and will grind away and heat the lounge while you equalise the room for 5.1 sound. Perhaps that's why they will release it in the depths of winter in the MS hemisphere?

Sounds like Vista will include all the pseudoscienfic audiophool facilities that we spend ages telling Audition users how to turn off when it messes up their sound.

Mine, though it has 1GB now, ran just fine on 512MB.

Read the ads from places like PCWorld or Comet...there are still lots of PCs being sold with only around 256 meg of RAM...and the people that buy there aren't too likely to upgrade!
(and, for international members, apologies for the UK references...but I bet you can get the context...)

Yes sorry, a bit facetious of me, just saying that to encourage people who read it to get more RAM. The PC manufacturers though (or is it the shops) are getting away with starting their customers off with low amounts of RAM, same amounts as a few years ago, when in fact the software and graphics generally has got more RAM demanding now. Maybe it's how they're able to offer price deals on the PCs .. but RAM is still quite inexpensive.

Yes yes, Audition will work perfectly on Windows Vista (as will all 32-bit software, that means all the software we currently use), just install the 32-bit version for now is the best advice, until all software has gone 64-bit.

....except (and I'm prepared to corrected on this) it won't easily work NOW because the installer is set to check the Windows version in use and doesn't yet recognise Vista. That was the case a couple of months back...it may have changed now but I don't recall hearing yet that this is so.

Although I haven't got Audition 2, I won't be upgrading to Vista until XP loses support from Microsoft and third party software and I think many feel the same way.

I felt like that about NT and Win 2000, until I saw Win 2000 in action and realised what a perverse decision that would be. I shall wait and see.

I've read in a couple of places that Vista's changes to the audio driver situation brings it towards having native ASIO-type drivers, but I haven't really looked into it any more.
It will be interesting to see what happens with drivers for the decent audio cards (particularly the older ones that I use), and also how this impinges on AA 2.0.
Maybe if it can be installed and then most of the visual 'features' turned off it might run fast enough to be worth a try. I suppose I should be keeping an eye on the Echo, M-Audio and similar sites.
