You could try using WinAmp to convert MP2 into WAV, then the MP3 creation software of your choice to convert WAV to MP3. It's not something I've needed to do so I don't know if there's any software which can do it directly.

Since all legitimate mp3 players are required to be backwards compatible, why is this necessary? Introducing another set of artifacts surely has to be a big disadvantage. Mp2s should play on any mp3 player. At least they have for me in the past.

Hasn't the backwards compatible requirement been quietly ignored by those who should know better recently? Even by some of those who drew up the standard.
I didn't think that the Fraunhofer mp3 decoder used in CE will actually decode an mp2, hence the workaround of importing an mp2 as a video file.
I haven't tried recently, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd hate to do this as the sound would be degraded significantly, but if you had to and you are still using CEP 1.2a, the best thing to look for on the net would be a program called coolmp32.exe (you may have to do quite a bit of searching for this nugget). This is the old MP2 filter that was offered on the Syntrillium website in beta mode and not officially supported. It's so old it predates the Cool Edit Pro MP3 filter for 1.2a. Note that if you use this, it can be very unstable, but it will allow MP2 files to decode into CEP 1.2a, and you can then use the CEp MP3 plug in to convert to MP3.
Or you can skip all that and just use 2.0. Open your MP2 file using "Extract from Video" and then save the resulting file as an MP3.

If you don't mind going a bit different route, dBPowerAmp does a fair job of conversion. And it does have an mp2 filter that works with it. Put that name in any big search engine and you should be able to turn up a free download somewhere (or you could look through the forum archives - it's been mentioned here before, also)
Good luck!
Best... -Jon

Craig, I've used that old filter once in a great while, all the way back to CE96 days. Now I've even plugged it into 2.0, and have to this day never seen that fabled instability to which you refer. I'll count myself lucky!
Pavell, your information is helpful and good. I think we should be clear that MPEG-1 data (usually video plus audio) can have Layer 1, Layer 2 (.mp2) or Layer 3 (.mp3) audio. Even more confusing is that MPEG-2 data can also use any of the old layers plus the option of the newer one and multichannel. In any case, a file with an .mp2 extension is without a doubt MPEG-1 Layer 2. What a mess.
See (not the first time this link has been seen on this forum!):

I only had trouble the first time I used it, but a fresh install has solved the problem. Others though have never gotten that kind of stability. For my radio production use, it's a really handy little bit to have over the last 4 years, just open up and MP2 rather than having to play it out of Winamp to DAT then back to CEP. Of course now that there's 2.0 and you can just extract the audio file it's all kinda moot.

I've loaded the files which are supposed to enable Cool Edit 2000 to save as mp2, but every time I save as mp2, i only get several seconds of static. I use Windows XP. What am I doing wrong? Others have said these files work very well with Cool 2000. Thanks.

Hi JM. You've brought this up in several threads, but I see that the questions to you have been left unanswered.
The question being...which MP2 filter are you using?
As you may have read, the old 'free' MP2 codec that used to be available had it's share of problems. The only one that we know to be rather consistent in it's performance is the 'QDesign' filter...
http://www.qdesign.com/products/about_products/filters.htm
Again, that's what I've 'heard'...it's not a Syntrillium product, so I can't personally guarantee it's effectiveness; but the word on the street has been good, and they're a pretty good company.
The other 'current' option that I know of is the standalone dBPowerAMP MP2 encoder/decoder...
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/
So, tell us what you're using. ;)
