I have my headphones plugged into the line-out/headphone jack on my sound card and I hear tons of system noises (mouse moving, hard drive cranking, etc). I do not hear it through the speakers, just the cans. Fortunately, the noises are not getting into my WAVs. But it is highly irritating and makes it extremely difficult to really hear the tracks.

Is this normal? Do folks just live with this?

I used to have this sort of problem with a laptop - these days it shouldn't happen with a decent soundcard, but none the less the inside of a computer is a pretty hostile environment for the analog stages of audio.

Can you tell us more about your system? It might help someone else give a more specific answer.

Well, if you're willing to 'shell-out' about $100US, there's a very nice monitoring solution from Echo Audio that you could use for mobile mixing... I should add that its requirements state a 500MHz or faster processor, however...

Have a look at "Indigo":

Fixed it.

In the Windows Mixer I had "CD Audio" checked for playback. Unchecking it cleared it up.

I guess, all the RF interference bouncing around inside the system case was bleeding in through the crappy little CD drive-to-soundcard cable.

Ah, yes... The "bad internal audio cable" scenario.
(Having built and repaired literally hundreds of computers, I know that problem very well! Heh! Big Grin )
