I've used SBLive for two years with my CEP and CE2K and have had nothing but good stuff coming and going. I've now upgraded my gear to an Oktava MK-319 mic, and a Eurorack MX602A 8-ch board with phantom power. I love the sound I'm getting in my headphones, but after plugging the Main Out into the line in of the soundcard, I'm hearing random clicking/popping on EVERYTHING, both freshly recorded and previously recorded spots on file.

Have I fried my soundcard with the phantom power (48v) going into it?Sad

One would hope not. The 48v Phantom power is only present on the INPUTS of the mixer, right? On some gear [Yamaha MD8], it's present on the 1/4 TRS ins, *and* the XLRs. On others [Spirit FX8/16], it's only on the XLRs (I prefer this). Mainly because sticking a mono-jack in a 48v phantom TRS jack puts 48v across the instrument being fed in. Not cool. Esp. when the 48v is only globally switchable and you're mixing XLR mics and instruments. :(

It shouldn't appear on Aux sends, Inserts (all usually unbalanced, it's hard to phantom them!) or on the Main/Sub outs (balanced OR unbalanced).

You've done something else [tm].

If the popping is in previously recorded spots, look into the usual threads here about optimising your system, disabling stuff you don;t need, audio cache and buffer settings. When playback is working, take a look at recording again.

P.S. You're not getting clicks and pops from the mixer, which are coming through the soundcard in "monitoring" mode, making you THINK there are clicks, are you? Disconnect the mixer and make sure!

Mike.

Thanks for the help, guys.
I've pulled the mixer and unplugged the thing while recording straight into the mic input of the souundcard...same thing

And when I went from the mixer to a cassette deck, I heard nothing.

I'm looking at maybe getting an MAudio Audiophile 2496, found at zzounds.com. I can have it next day for $170.00. Or maybe an Echo Mia PC Digital Audio Interface for $50.00 more. I know I get what I pay for, but I'm still struggling out here in Freelanceadonia.

I just thought....do I need an additional sound card if I'm using an interface?

A moment's thought will reveal that, of course, if this is happening with exsisting material, then it has nothing to do with the input to the soundcard! There are any number of possible causes for this, but the mixer being plugger in is very unlikely to be anything more than just a coincidence. The first thing to do is to plug a pair of headphones directly into the soundcard output and see if the crackling is still there, or whether it's your monitoring that is causing this - after all, the symptoms you describe make this rather more likely to be replay-based than on the input side, don't they?

This, on the other hand is a good idea. Either of these cards will give you significantly better results than a SBlive! will, regardless of clicks. And no, just the one soundcard will do fine. But I would be inclined to investigate the cause of the clicks anyway - if they are caused by your monitoring, then changing the soundcard won't make them go away.

On the other hand, there is the possibility that your PC is actually introducing them (do the headphone check). Have you altered anything about the software? I'd guess that we really need a little more info about your system before we can say definitively what's causing this, I think.

Checked the line out in my headphones....same sappy cround.
And here's a strange: Remember I said the noise was random? Well I just cut a spot by recording short segments until I got ones without noise, then pasted'em together. Jast as things were sounding good, I addeed music and fx on other tracks, and the noise became worse, and the final mixdown soundedd like a bonfire.

Very frustraiting.>:K

Thanks Steve, and everyone else.

Looks like it WAS the soundcard. Went and got me an Echo Mia, and all is sounding well.
Your recommendations were very appreciated.
Thanks again.
