Hi. I've been using Cool Edit Pro 1.2a and a 16-bit SoundBlaster card up to now. I'm running on a Pentium II, 266 with Windows 98 (version 4.10) and 192MB of RAM. I've primarily been using this set up for converting tape and vinyl to CD. I decided to upgrade a little and have recently installed a Hoontech DSP24 Value card and am now using Cool Edit Pro 2. (For the DSP24 Value card I've installed the latest driver for it which is: VXD Driver V6.2.1023.) I'm running the signal from a tape deck to the DSP24 Value card via the RCA inputs on the sound card.
I'm having the following glitches: 1) While I can see that I'm receiving a signal, I can't hear or manually adjust the level of that incoming signal prior to, or during, recording. 2)While I can record and play back a 16/44.1 audio file, it seems I can only record a new file at 24/96 but can't play this file back.
I've tried various configurations in the "device properties" and "device order" areas of Cool Edit Pro as well as the looking into the Input/Output Mixer of the sound card. I've not made any changes from the default settings in the clock or device settings of the sound card's software because that's all greek to me.
Any assistance in solving these glitches would be much appreciated.- Thanx- D. Ledin

Hi there. Well, I'd say that any monitoring problems that you're encountering are entirely related to the Hoontech's mixer - so, if you haven't ventured there yet (which evidently, you haven't) that's the first place to start.
Most mixer panels tend to mute inputs (by default) to avoid massive overloads to your speakers (in the event that you had volumes to hot, etc. etc.) It typically requires one or two checkboxes/sliders to enable inputs for monitoring, and you're good to go. The Hoontech manual should provide some insight into this.
Now, as far as settings within CEP2, there are a few (Device Order and Device Properties work together, found under the Options menu)...so the first thing to do is to set the Hoontech's main 1/2 In/Out (or whichever you're connected to) and make those the "1st" device in the list, removing WAVE MAPPER (which is CEP2's default).
And just another thought...even for simple 2-channel operation, you're really running the minimum requirement for CEP2, in terms of machine specs. Just something to keep in mind if you find that performance is lacking. (and oh yeah...check your connections!)

OK-problem solved. It was simply a matter of how I was hooking up my speakers.(duh) Having only previous experience with an inexpensive SoundBlaster card that provided only a 1/8 inch stereo jack output, I assumed the 1/8 inch jack was where my speakers needed to be plugged into the DSP24 Value card. Wrong. Plugged into the 1/8 inch jack I was able to hear the usual operating system sounds and could playback a 16-bit audio file. I figured everything was wired in correctly. I thought the RCA outputs on the DSP24 card were for connecting to some device other than speakers. Wrong. So for other newbies out there using this card- connect your monitoring system to the RCA outputs. Beyond that you should direct Cool Edit to record via "ADSP24 Ext. Input 1/2" and playback via "ADSP Ext. WaveOut 1/2" and things should be just fine. Now that was easy wasn't it? By the way- this card is a great improvement over the 16-bit SB card. Thanks for all the input Synt. (I promise I'll upgrade my CPU in the not-too-distant future)-DLedin
