Can anyone recommend or point me in the direction of a decent dual mono +4 (xlr or 1/4") to -10 (RCA) converter?
Thanks in advance!
Rich

Hey Rich,
Check out Whirlwind's site. They manufacture and distribute just about everything and anything having to do with audio cabling.

See
- http://www.rdlnet.com/a_line.htm (I have not tried these...)
- or build your own: http://emusician.com/ar/emusic_build_em_level/index.htm (but you will need a copy of the mag to see the schematics and circuit board layout)

Assuming that you want to go from +4dBu to the lower level of -10dBv, all you need is an attenuator that knocks 11-12dB of signal off. The other way is harder, because you have to amplify by the same amount, and strictly speaking, balance the output.

But what you want can be done for a few cents/pence (depending upon where you are), and the cost of the connectors and a box to put it in (this is going to cost far more than the attenuator!)

If you can confirm that this is actually the way around you want to do it, I will post the schematic here - we are not talking rocket science!

When you ask to convert "+4 XLR" to "-10 RCA", I assume you mean "+4 dBu balanced" (aka professional) to "-10 dBV unbalanced" (aka consumer). It is quite significant if you are converting from balanced to unbalanced, because an improper connection here can lead to hum, noise and signal losses (as you probably already know).

I suggest you look at http://www.dplay.com/dv/balance/balance.html for an explanation and advice on connecting. If you are working with balanced XLR connections, note that there can be differences in pin assignments between manufacturers, especially US vs European. Check your manuals.

By the way, I found another line matching/converting gadget you might be interested in: the Rolls MB15 ProMatch -- http://www.rolls.com/new/mb15.html Guitar Center shops usually carry Rolls equipment. See the Rolls site for other US dealers.

Thanks for all the great info1 I found an Ebtech line level shifter on ebay for $24.00 and couldn't pass it up. I can go either way via 1/4" smart jacks which recognize balanced or unbalanced.
