Ever tried putting a flange or chorus on a bass? Sounds like crap huh? I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but I've been using a plugin called "Bass Chorus" since it first came out and it does some amazing things to bass. It sounds much less harsh than any other software flange I've ever used. Best of all, it's FREE!!! Just thought I'd share the wealth. Check it out:
http://www.cloneensemble.com/ (I can't link directly to the site. Just hit the "Bass Chorus" folder on the left.)
It looks a bit cheesy, but there you have it.

Good to hear that someone has addressed this for the masses!
I've always found that chorusing bass is fraught with anomalies, particularly if one goes too heavy with it and/or uses a modulation rate that's too fast (I'm also a bass player, so I have a major interest in this area, myself ). Moderation is the key, unless you're looking for a specific effect. I suppose that holds true with most instruments, although bass doesn't lend itself well to just any chorus setup. I do like a little, if only just enough to fatten things a bit, even if it's not otherwise audible.
Best... -Jon

Thanks for responding. I too play bass, and it can be a pain to get it in the mix. This plugin comes in handy for widening the bass as well. If you convert the bass to a stereo track and tweak it a little, it will get it out of the center beautifuly without the side affects of a standard delay (phase issues). I know many feel strongly about keeping the bass mono, and I often feel the same way, but sometimes when you're scratching your head over a mix, this can be just the ticket. Don't worry, I don't work for this guy. I know it's freeware and all, but it's good. DOWNLOAD IT!

Hey Post,
Thanks for the link! I downloaded the BassChorus and played around with it. Haven't had alot of time, though I think it will prove helpful occasionally. Good Luck Voodoo

I think you'll also notice something about this plug that parallels many effective hardware chorus setups - it mostly affects the higher frequencies.
I always like to use a high-pass filter for any bass signal that I want to put some chorus on, leaving the low freq's alone. My stage rig is certainly set up that way; Being an engineer also, I can always sympathize with the person out at FOH, who somehow has to fold a bunch of low-end mud into an intelligible mix....

"Front Of The House" Engineer. On larger sound venue jobs, it is quite common to have a monitor engineer/crew as well as an engineer/crew out front. Hence the name, FOH engineer. I use the term crew loosely, because usually you are strapped for help. (unless it's a Union job or a well funded job). I've worked both and definitely preferred FOH! Good Luck Voodoo

Sorry about that, post. (I guess I accidentally broke my own rule of "never assume anything"...)
FOH is my preference, also....
Running monitors can be...shall we say, "challenging" at times?
Especially when you've got some of your people on in-ear monitors, as well as wedges and side-fills going, all at the same time. And of course everyone always wants "more me"...
(heh-heh-heh...)

It's not all bad up there at the side of the stage, though. The worst part is what Voodoo alluded to - being short of hands. Large, well-funded gigs are very much preferred!
Best... -Jon

I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing, but the monitor jobs I've done have always involved wedges and cross-washes. I've never had the priviledge of working with an in-ear system. Good Luck Voodoo

Let's just say that in-ears can be a bit more involved, particularly if the users are wearing some of the Ultimate Ears models (or something similar), which aren't ported - This leaves it in your hands to make up a realistic mix for them, since they can't really hear the stage at all! Fortunately it isn't terribly difficult, most of the time. I even use some strategically placed mics up on the stage, just for that purpose.
I don't have to do this a whole lot, though. A few gigs a year, perhaps. I usually have too much other stuff on my plate!
Best... -Jon

Er...
So, does that mean that you think I have a poopy diaper on my plate?
(hint: you've lost me, totally!)
Or was it some cryptic way of pushing this thread back to the top?

It was just a bump. But I'm not to sure what people are eating nowadays. (I stopped eating years ago, I'm just that good, seriously.) ;-)

"I stopped eating years ago, I'm just that good, seriously."
A breatharian, eh?
Or do you, like the rest of us, live off sound alone?
Audairian?
Sonarian (not!)
CoolEditarian?
Ahh... I'm hungry for a haiku!

The C_Superstereo VST plugin (usable in CE with a DX wrapper) has a bass width control, among other very handy 'mastering' things. Just thought I'd throw that in. Or away.
