Decided to go with the more than wonderful CEP2.0 ... This is my first post here --- Greetings everyone!
I'm rebuilding a machine for it and need to tweek its beak some. Have read all the tips Syntrillium MD and others have posted and do know about the optimizer links - thanks much!
Have a somewhat odd configuration though - halfway between ATA100 and SCSI...
Dual 900 PIII (not overclocked)
512 RAM
I'll be installing XP
Have Two Logical drives, composed of three physical drives:
- Two IBM ata100's (80 gig, 7200 rpm) set to RAID striping mode (hardware striping on MoBo) appears as one drive, E:
- One Maxtor 5 gig, slower IDE, appears as drive C:
Where do you suggest the OS swapper file go - on the RAID drive?
Or, since I'll be using the RAID as the data area, should XP's swap file go the other (although slower drive)?
Or should I partition the RAID in two, one small and one large, and put the swap on the small partition?
I read something about CEP needing a temp area, where would that be best?
And does this even *matter* with RAID and 7200 RPM if I'm not tracking more than 4 in??
(Might have many out, with only 4 in though)
Did see a couple of posts RE dual AMD's --- Any problems with dual real Intel's and VIA chips (with or without RAID)?
you Music Editors are Cool!
thanks Much,

Page 222 of the online CEP 2 manual says the 'primary and secondary temp' folder/files should be on physically separate disks. So should the swapper file (ideally) go on a THIRD physically separate disk, or would it work fine on the same disk as the secondary temp?
wondering if I'll get an answer...

It's great that you have you have three spindles to play with. However there's no guaranteed answer about what'll work best. Experimenting with your options can be time consuming, but without a very confident understanding of how CE moves data around your options are either experiment or guess.
fwiw, I have two hard drives and did not RAID them together, even though my motherboard supports it. OS, swap, programs, and the data files are on the first spindle and the CE temp file is on the second. For some operations this setup is very fast (14MB/sec for writes), for others it's clear that the disk arm is thrashing because both the source and destination are on the same spindle (3MB/sec).
If there is a lot of paging (not enough RAM for the amount of data you're shoving around) then on the same volume (the RAID set) as your data and your temp files is not where you want the swap file to be. It's up to you to measure or guess whether thrasing on the RAID set when paging would be slower than uncontested writes to the 5-gigger. I would start with swap on the 5G drive.
If there is little or no paging under normal use, then put the swap file anywhere you like :-)

Thanks Moregan
well, you've confirmed that this gearhead stuff is not always so easy :)
I'll try the swapper on the slower drive and see what happens...
Does the secondary temp file matter in all this?
