Hi Sinister. Just to echo Graeme's comments -
The short and sweet is this...Echo MIA is 100% capable of 24-bit/96k recording;
The Audigy has some 24/96 capability - none of which seems to be concrete nor understood...but for certain, it is really still a 16-bit 48k card.

The message is actually that the MIA is good for what you say you want, the SB is not. You will understand better if you read more about the topics. It is just too hard for anyone to try to give you a complete education in one e-mail.

The answer to your question is quite complicated in detail, but the simple answer is that Synt's 32-bit format comprises a 24-bit data word with an exponent (multiplying factor) and a sign, + or -. If you recorded as straight 32-bit the least significant 8 bits would be filled with zeros, but it would still work fine. But Synt's 32-bit system 'floats' which is actually far more flexible when it comes to processing.
You won't be getting 32-bit cards - there's no point. The potential dynamic range on even a 24-bit card exceeds what can actually be inputted from the real world by quite a significant margin. Basically, the laws of physics relating to thermal noise get in the way. Higher sampling rates are not a problem, but after 96k I think it's getting a bit silly anyway.
MIA = good card
AUDIGY = good joke[/list:99fe1545b8]
The onlyadvantage that an Audigy Platinum has is the front panel breakout box - as a games card and a card that's suitable for superficially easy-to-make relatively mediocre recordings, I suppose it's okay. The Mia is a proper sound card, with no mic preamp, input level controls, or anything like that (although the monitoring is flexible) that is best used in conjunction with a mixer, especially for the sort of recordings you want to do. If you have S/PDIF sources available, or an external converter, you can record 4 tracks at once. There are also virtual outputs available, so that you can output from more than 1 application at the same time, mixing the results into a single output pair.
Like Andy says, I can't give you a complete education in one post, but I can try to give you a synopsis of one!

Try getting a SoundSystem DMX 6Fire 24/96.. It is about 180 dollars and it is better than the AUdigy.
