I have an acient SBLive card and an even more ancient Echo Darla (the original!). Up until now I have been using the SB for game sound etc. and for it's support for soundfonts. When I compose I use Jammer and Cakewalk to work on the backing tracks and I use the soundfont support in CW to preiew the soundfonts sound I want to use.
Then I run the midi file through Audio Compositor (which renders via soundfonts) to generate .wav files that I open in CEP and do all the "live" bits and editing etc. All the analogue audio stuff goes out via the Darla. (I have an exciting arrangement of phono cables to take the output of the Darla to the input of the SB when I need it.)
OK - all this is getting a bit old and I want to change out the SB and the Darla. If possible I want one card, but I still need to be able to hear soundfonts via CW to choose the sounds I want. Is this possible with another card? Or do I have to keep the SB for this.
Audio Compositor does not need a soundfont compatible card, does CW?
And finally - can anyone suggest some manufacturers of audio cards to start investigating. I have Echo already.
Thanks
Mark

Hey Mark,
Take a look at Jim S's reply of 01/01/2002 : 12:25:24 PM in this thread:
'what's the use of CEP'
Apparently there's a softsynth plug now (from Twelve Tone) that'll give you soundfonts, whatever your card.
Not sure about it - haven't had a look yet, myself - I just noticed his reply and thought of your question, here.
;-)
Best... -Jon

Mark, about all you would need, beside whatever card you decided to get, would be upgrade cakewalk to at least the lowest end music creator version (all the current cakes support dxi, I don't think anyone else yet makes a dxi host, but maybe I'm wrong), and add in the dxi softsynth LiveSynth Pro. voila, instant soundfont support on any card. of course, it needs fast processor, all that, being software based, but sure as shootin, it works.
