Is this possible, as I would like to record something from a Real Player file when it plays back, as it isn't possible to save the file
Any suggestions?

It can be done. Make sure your soundcard is set to record all sounds (can be called wave rec mixer or something similar) in Windows. Your soundcard now should record all sounds 'made' by your pc. Now just start recording in Cool Edit while you play the real player! Good luck!

No luck there, or am I doing it wrong, when I set the record on CE an error message appears as follows:
MMSYSTEM004 The specified device is already in use. Wait until it is free, and then try again
Any more help, I'm sure that it is simple to do, but I need instructions - real basic instructions!!

I'm able to record by clicking Play in RP first, then clicking Record in CE after RP is already playing.
Doesn't work for me the other way around. You may get different results, however.
This means that the first part of the song is missing; I have to replay in RP while CE is still recording in order to get the beginning few seconds. Then in CE I cut the beginning and paste it where it belongs.

Doesn't work, I still get the following message, when I press record
MMSYSTEM004 The specified device is already in use. Wait until it is free, and then try again
Anyone else, this is infuriating!

Hmmm...this is a pretty common practice, and typically very easy to achieve. Make sure that only CE and Real are open. You may want to try combinations of record/play...
It could be, however, a limitation of your soundcard, particularly if it's not full-duplex. Maybe the card just needs an updated driver - that might be a place to start.
What card are you using?

Hmmm..well, what version of Cool Edit are you using? And, did you wind up downloading an updated driver for your card? I'd probably start there...If you continue to have problems, please email

Hmm Monk, I just did something like this the other night to record Drone's mp3 sample into CoolEdit [Pro]. I got nothing until I messed with the Windows Mixer. Then it worked for me; I got the wave and could edit or save it as usual.
As I recall, the drill went like this...
Double click on Master Volume Control in the system tray. Options. Properties. Adjust volume for: "Recording". Show the following volume controls: "Mixer" (there were other boxes checked as well, everything except video). Click OK. Make sure that Mixer control is halfway up. Minimize.
Go into CoolEdit. Options. Settings. Devices. Waveform Record. Select your windows soundcard (the one that normally plays mp3s to your speaker). Click OK.
Back in CoolEdit. Hit Record. Click over to Real. Click Play. When done, click Stop in CoolEdit. That was all it took.
(It might be good to go back into Master Volume Options afterward, and change back to Adjust volume for: "Playback". Click OK. Close.)

Oh yeah, I forgot. In CoolEdit I also had to start this off with a "new" file. I don't think the specific settings matter if you're doing an analog recording here; I chose 44.1/16 bit since I was just messing around and it wasn't a 32-bit card anyway.

Right that still didn't work!
I'm using version 1.2 of CE
When I set CE recording first, I get no sound from the real player item I want to record and if I set the Real player item playing first I get that error message when I press record!

It is actally possible to download the real audio file, though I don't think Cool Edit is capable of opening these.
What you do is right click on the link, and select 'save target as'
Save the file and then open it in Windows notepad. In there, you will see the URL to the actual real audio sound file, which you can now download!

Followed all of those instructions, right up to the point of "you can now download" - As far as I can tell, or the way I'm doing it, it won't download or at least is not recordable or able to save it!
Here's the link, let me know if you can do it

Thanks to anyone

D'oh! They must have made the file totally non-downloadable or something. I have used that above method before with success, but it ain't working this time.
Here is what I did following on from the previous steps anyway ...
Open a new notepad file, copy the below text in (the html code) and save the file, but when saving, in the file type combo box select "all files" and make sure that the file name ends with .htm or .html
Then open the file, right click on the link and "save target as"
It usually has worked for me, but not this time. Sorry ...
Anyway, here is the code:

</a>

I can do this no problem with my old sb 128 pci,so I don't know where the problem is,but you can work around it by recording onto a minidisk or something in then record it again with your line in,it's a bit more work, but at least you'll have the file!!!!

Not having a minidisc is a little problem.
I recorded it onto cassette, then I could go through the whole CE recording process, but I'd lose some quality and it really seems to be too much of a mess about.
I'd love to record it and some other stuff from the site directly onto my HD

You could try a program called Total Recorder which uses a virtual sound driver to capture the output of programs like Real Player and then save them as standard WAV files or MP3s. There's a built-in timer so you can record web broadcasts as well. See http://www.highcriteria.com for more details of a useful little tool.

Perfect, that worked a treat, is there a free full version out there somewhere, as the sample one only records 40 seconds!
