Hi all,
First let me say I'm two weeks old in CEP. I have download as many Freeware DX plugins from www.directxfiles.com as possible to get an idea of what's what. I read about the ability to run VST plugins in Cool Edit using some kind of software adapter. Is this true for freeware VST synths as well?
Can someone explain to me in as simplistic a way as possible how/where I go about using/obtaining freeware VST stuff? Thanks,MUCH thanks in advance!

On the Direct X files there are 2-3 places listed for vst adapters. I use the one by FXpansion, but I think they all work. Some are free and some cost. I think there are 2 free ones and I used one successfully for a long time, so they are a good way to get your feet wet. Go to the Steinberg website and look around. There is an equivalent there of the direct x files and many vst plug ins are listed. Once you get there, you may also find a site that is part of the cubase vst ring.... that will take you to a lot of other sites. There are MANY free vst plug ins out there. Some are great, some so-so... but they are fun to play with.
Plugins are not the same as soft synths. Some vst wrappers will let you play soft synths... but you need the correct type of host program. At this time CE does not support that.

rjt>I'm looking at the Spin Audio VST DX Wrapper Lite Freeware tool. Is this the one you had previously used? If not What would you suggest in freeware.
Can anyone give me some inside scoops on what VST Freeware Plugins to check out and which ones to stay away from. what to avoid.
Much Thanks

That one is okay and I think FXpansion still has their free one. If you end up buying one, they do a lot more. (e.g., the fx expansion one allows you to open several different plugs etc.) If you go to the Steinberg website, you'll get a ton of free ones. I can't say I like any way more than others, there are some good free direct x ones as well. If you surf around, you'll be able to download 30-50 free plugs easily. Try'em, just get rid of them if you don't like them.

Thanks again rjt!
Looks like FXpansion dosen't have a freeware version anymore. Anywhere on the web that has it archived? Well I started hunting and I've found some neat stuff. I'll post if I come across anything unusual. Thanks again.
