I downloaded this yesterday and installed it, but the DirectX menu is greyed out.
The only thing I can think of is that I foolishly ignored the message referring to DirectX media when installing. I assumed that since I had DirectX 8.1 all would be well. Duh.
I've searched the forum and can't find any reference to this problem, or to the difference between DirectX and DirectX media (if that IS what it said). Can someone enlighten me?

There must be hundreds of DX plug-ins - and you don't say which one you are talking about. However, as a general rule, having installed the plug-in on your computer, you need to open CEP, go to the effects menu and click on 'Refresh Effects List'. CEP will search your machine and then display whatever DX plug-ins it finds.
Be aware, CEP knows nothing about DXi - so if it's one of those, you're out of luck.

Should have been more precise, sorry...
I'm talking about the DX add-on to CE that allows DX plugins to work with it. I installed the tremolo plugin at the same time. 'Refresh list' doesn't find anything though.

Oh, we're talking the DX enabling add-on for CE2000...
Well this should work fine, assuming that the rest of your system's okay. But if the 'tremolo' effect doesn't work, then is the first thing to check is whether the DX facility is enabled. Presumably if you can refresh the list, it is. Now, your only problem is to install the tremolo effect where the CE2000 expects to find plugins!
Now on my system, the DX tremolo is in the path C:/Program Files/Syntrillium/DirectX/Tremolo, and there are four files in there, one called syn-Tremolo.ax which is the one doing the work.
This should be enough info to get you going...

Thanks for the advice - I only now had time to get back to this. It now works, in fact it always did... The effects were unavailable before because I didn't have any sound loaded into Cool Edit at the time. In my haste to try out my new toy I forgot that the menu would be greyed out if there was nothing for it to work on.
Sorry to waste your time. Would someone slap me with a large cod on my way out?

Hehe! That's okay - you're not the first, and you won't be the last. So basic that I didn't even think to mention it - silly me.
As for cod, we can't get large ones here at present - I tried the other day. Seems that there are some restrictions on this...
