I have downloaded Cool Edit 2000 (trial) and trying to edit a 4-bit .vox file. When opening these files, there is not option for a 4-bit vox file. Can anyone help?

I'm not sure if it's the same in Cool Edit 2000 or not, as I've only got CEP 2.1 in front of me. But anyway, when I go to open a file, the VOX format is listed as "Dialogic ADPCM (.vox)". Is this what you're after?

I can confirm that "Dialogic ADPCM (.vox)" is the seventh item down on the CE2000 list. So to open your vox files, Marie, use 'Open As', and pick this file format out of the list. Then they should open. And if for any reason they don't, then report back...

I have tried to use the Dialogic ADPCM .vox to open the files, but I can only open an 8-bit, 16-bit, or a 32-bit file. The file I am trying to open is a 4-bit vox file recorded on an OS/2-Warp system with multiple prompts; no matter what settings I use, I can only hear scratches. This might not be the correct software, but this is what was recommended.

Hmm... By having a quick search around, I found '.VOX to .MP3 conversion' - it contains a little information that pertains to your situation, but it seems to imply that you may have to do some experimenting...

It definitely should be able to open them. And I believe all VOX files are 4-bit. Here's a quote from the user manual (CEP 2.1):
Quote: |
The Dialogic ADPCM format is commonly found in telephony applications, and has been optimized for low sample rate voice. It will only save mono 16-bit audio, and like other ADPCM formats, it compresses to 4-bits/sample (for a 4:1 ratio). This format has no header, so any file format with the extension .vox will be assumed to be in this format. When opening VOX files, you’ll be prompted for a sample rate unless “Don’t ask for further details” is checked in the Open a Waveform dialog |
Now, I'm using CEP 2.1, but if I just go to File > Open and click on the VOX file, I see "4-bit Dialogic ADPCM" in the 'File Info' box. Then, when I click OK, it prompts me for the sample rate, then it opens. I would also try just opening them using 'Open' first, and then trying 'Open As' if that doesn't work for you.
Also, you might want to try downloading the CEP 2.1 demo and see if it behaves any differently.
