Maybe I am expecting too much of the regular version of Cool Edit but I want to lay down music on one track and record vocal on the second. How can I get the first track to play back while I record the second.
Don’t tell me I need to upgrade, to Pro or purchase the multi track plug-in.

If you have data in one track already, and you 'key-up' a second track to record, when you hit the record button, the first track will automatically play-back (through the play-back device allocated to it) whilst the new data is recorded into the second track.
What happens when you hit record - don't you hear anything? Have you checked that the 1st track is set to playback through the expected device?

I get silence.
I have both recording and playback set for the same (only) soundcard.
Can I do this on the two tracks of the same waveform or do I have open up seperate tracks?

Tell us exactly which version you have. Sounds to me like you don't have a multitrack version, in which case you are limited to what you can achieve with the various forms of cut and paste in the Edit menu (esp Mix Paste).

I just purchased Cool Edit 2000. I have not purchased the extra multi track plugin. Since I only need two tracks, I hoped this would work.
Previously I used Audicity, an open source mixer as my needs are simple. It allowed me to chose to hear or mute the other track, but did not have the dynamic amplitude filters Cool Edit has.
I don't want to buy the multi-track plugin as I might as well wait to migrate to Adobe in August.
If this version does not allow me to monitor the previous track while recording a new one then I can't think of any value it has to me.

CE2k is just a stereo editor. If you want to do multitrack recording and overdubs you need either the PRO version, the CE2k multitrack plugin, or wait for Audition.
Didn't want to hear that? Sorry, but it's just this simple ... you bought the wrong software for what you want to do. I'd do a little research and figure out which is going to be cheaper ... upgrading from CE2k to Pro 2.1 now, then getting the free crossover to Audition from Adobe, or just waiting for Audition. Audition and 2.1 are identical with only the names changing to protect the innocent. The advantage of the first way is that you can be multitracking in 20 minutes rather than waiting a month. Either way you'll get some credit for what you've already paid.

Ouch.
Thanks for confirming my fear.
The plug-in is $49.00 bringing my total cost to $118.00
I don't see an upgrade so the price of CEP is $249.
Or I can wait for Audition and upgrade for $99.00
Since I did not need four tracks I thought I could use the two stereo tracks as I do on other editors. This was the only editor I have seen that does not let me play one track while recording on the other.
I would not have purchased it, had I known of this limitation.
Thanks for you help

The upgrade price from Syntrillium is $199, so the absolute steal of a deal is to wait until August and see if Adobe is still going to give CE2k owners the full update to CEP/Audition for only $99.
If you were formerly using Audicy, what are you recording?
If I were you, and I'm not, I'd still get the Adobe $99 upgrade. It may be more than you need now, but you recording needs change. CEP/Audition is a really powerful tool that is also easy to use. If the posted update prices are correct, Adobe will be rewarding you and hosing everyone who only has the earlier version of CEP.

>>If you were formerly using Audicy, what are you recording?<<
Clips for AM radio.
I record spoken voice sometimes over a music bed as a bumper, but nothing too high quality. Most recordings are dubbed from cassette interviews or direct from microphone. I had hoped to record from a microphone over the music bed, but I like reference of hearing the other track.
I felt Cool Edit offers better dynamic filters and is more industry standard for flexability.
The problem with Adobe, is that I may have to also upgrade hardware as well.
Such is the nature of the beast.
Do I go back to re-evaluating nuendo, Saw-Pro, Audition, and the host of other packages?

Audition IS Cool Edit Pro 2.1 with a different splash page. As of the end of august, Cool Edit Pro will dissappear. Read the thread on Adobe buying Syntrillium's technology. You will not need to change any hardware with CEP 2.1 or Audition 1.0 that you don't already have working with CE2k.
Nuendo is nice, but it'll cost you more than the upgrade prices you are looking at now. It's more for music production and is heavily MIDI compatible, so it's even more overkill for what you are trying to do. SAW?!?? They're dead. Finished. Gone. Bye-bye. No longer in business or have software available.
If you want to do this absurdly cheap, keep the CE2k you have now and use it as an editor. Yes the effects it has are pretty good, but remember that you don't have all the effects available. They are included in CEP, or available for a limited time as plugins for CE2k from Syntrillium. And I'm not talking echo, chorus or reverb. I mean things you may need down the road like noise reduction. For you voice over music needs, since you don't want to pay the upgrade prices, there is always Pro Tools Free from Digidesign. Not that several people here have had problems with this, but it is free and will give you 8 tracks and is supposed to work on PC.
