We are a band from Chennai, India and we are trying to record our songs using cool edit. but we are facing some problems.
our config is Soundcard - Soundblaster Live 5.1 with cool edit pro. now the problem currently faced while trying to record any input into the software is a bloody loud sound that drowns out all input into the sound card.. but this problem doesn't come when recording using Soundblaster live's recorder.. of course that is a very basic thing, so we need to make cooledit work properly with our inputs..pease someone help

What sort of loud sound?
Have you correctly set up the software to understand your soundcard? (Options > Device Settings) - and don't use wavemapper.
Is this an expired evaluation copy or the real thing - and which version?

ok, i'll get specific..
I've configured Cooledit to work with the right sound card.
Then i connected the mike as input to my Line In (I tried similarly with Microphone slot also with the same result) slot of the sound card.
I checked the Show Record Levels (i dont remember the exact label) to check what it is getting as input. The modulations were as per the input I gave to the mike. Now if i arm a particular track and try to record, the recording level is always at max and the o/p is nothing but a loud buzz..
Have I missed out any setup for the sound card in cooledit? In Devices settings, I have configured Soundblaster only as my input device. Can I connect my mike directly to the line-in/microphone socket? Pls explain it to me like I'm a 4 year old:shy:

Don't you think it would have more sense to plug the mic into the mic input?

Sounds like a defective mic or its connector, or it's the wrong sort for the socket (mono mike in stereo socket or the other way round). Can you try a different mike?

yup, will try that.. but even then, how come it works fine with another recorder? (The sound card Soundblaster Live, came with a recording s/w. When i tried recording from the mike using that software, it recorded without any buzz!)

Well, that's odd - when it's recording, my understanding is that Cool Edit is doing nothing more than passing what comes off the soundcard to the drive - in other words, nothing special at all. When you had this problem, did you try the SB software at once without changing anything else? In other words, I'm wondering whether the problem could have arisen between using the SB software and using Cool Edit from an intermittent connection in the mic/connector/soundcard. Only one other thing - when you have both your record and playback from your soundcard correctly set up in the Options > Devices tabs, ensure that 'use in EV' is ticked for the soundcard in both places. Ok, another one-other-thing - just make sure you are familiar with the contents of the 'setting the windows mixer' thread in the 'tips and tricks' forum here.

Still don't know what version of CE you are using, but assume SB is digitising input sound at 16bit 44.1kHz, is that the way you have CE set up to receive the sound?

i'll have to check up on that.. my setup's in my hometown.. go there only in the weekends..
Pavell, I already tried all the things you said.. had experimented fully with the windows volume mixer before i gave up..
Thanx for all the tips, folks..
Guess i'll have to look up the Tips N' Tricks forum and break my head over it a lil longer:S

So when you pre-monitor, the level reads properly, but as soon as you hit start/recording then the levels sound and look like feedback?
Is this what happens? Does the card have a little built in digital mixer?

Well you may have to turn the mixer off, or some of the channels.

Unless I missed it, I haven't seen you mention that you've checked the mic volume level on the record side of the Windows mixer. Or whatever input you happen to be using. You sure it's not set too high ?
