Hi Radio Folks,
I'm jealous. How come radio seems to be the only place (besides TV and movies I guess) where RMS multi band compressors hang out? I don't see them at all in the pro audio < $1000 arena.
For example:
http://www.261.gr/proradio.html
http://www.crlsystems.com/products/am/crllegend.html
Have you folks, in your travels, ever seen plugins that will do this king of thing, RMS multi band compression?
I know CEP has the band-limited rms compressor that could potentially be stacked to make a multiband. But it doesn't have any gain reduction lights which I claim to need (talk me out of that, please !). After I stack about 3 or 4 of these guys my head is spinnin around the room looking for the one that's pumping.
Any thoughts ? RMS is really the thing for me on full mixes of a band, orchestra or anything.
What am I doin over here ? Like I said you broadcast folks seem to have all the cool equipment! All we have on the other side are Peak multiband compressors...

Hi kylen,
Now, I'm not saying this is going to be anything like a broadcast processor - far from it. Those are highly specialized devices, often with EQ and compression....
However, I think you're missing something that's right in your pocket, already!
Remember when I told you to try stacking compressors in an FX rack?
And band-limit each one to a specific frequency range of your choosing?
Well, of course there's a lot of other setup parameters you can tweak to get all this sounding like you want it, but if you look on the "Attack/Release" tab of each dynamics processor, you'll see a radio button in the level detector section which might just be of some assistance to you.....
;)
Best... -Jon

Hi jonrose,
Yes I remember. I keep plugging away at that. In fact I have a session lined up tonight. I'm just getting stumped by the lack of gain reduction lights but I'll try the CEP rms band-limited compressor some more.
thanks,
kylen

Ah, okay...
Just making sure you knew it was there. I kind of missed that you had mentioned it (roundabout) to begin with. ;)
And yes, I suppose the lack of visual feedback might be a detriment to some folks' working styles... It's a forced lesson in ear-training, isn't it? Heh! :D
Don't give up, and good luck with it!
Best.... -Jon

On the topic of visual feedback - I concurr, since even a single short row of pixels would be fine, to indicate the ammount of compression in db., and allow you to set ballpark levels for each band visually, and then use your ears.
