Going to University soon, setting up a miniture recording studio, using Cool Edit as a multitrack recorder. Is this wise?

What equipment do I need? Mixer/compressor/fx processor/mics/leads? What type? Rememebrr, I'm on a small budget, so can anyone reccomend anything?

I'm also on the lookout for a keyboard - is it possible to find one cheaply that is good?

I need to buy a car.

Which one is going to do the job? How much will I need to spend? I'm on a tight budget!

Is this a wise thing to do?

If you ask a more precise question, you might get a more precise answer - see 'Experts advice (mike/mixer for voiceovers)' for instance. You really will have to give us full details of your requirement before anyone will trouble to give you a full reply.

No, chaps, I think that this is a specific enough request...

If you are going to University to study anything other than multitrack recording in your room, no it isn't wise. You'd be better off concentrating on your studies, and socialising and having a good time. If you lock yourself away for hours on campus during term-time, you will be regarded as some sort of nerd. You would be better off using your miniature studio as a diversion at home during breaks.

Also, if you are going to study a subject with any degree of academic rigour, you won't get much spare time anyway - and what you do have, you would probably be better off utilising for physical exercise, which is likely to keep you mentally fitter.

You may not heed my advice - but I can tell you that it's based on a lot of experience of student behaviour - no, not just mine! If you are doing a course that requires you to do things like this as a part of its academic structure, then rather better facilities than youe mini-studio will be made available to you anyway.

This may not have been quite what you were expecting in the way of an answer, but please give it some thought anyway... Uni is expensive now, and if you are going to get the best value out of it, then you really shouldn't try to put too many obstacles and tempting distractions in your way.

Uncle SteveG does make a point worth considering.....

Actually I'm going to shoot myself in the foot and despite your lack of a proper brief in your thread, and to divert myself from a huge pile of accounts here, I'll give you some very generalised thoughts -

Mixer - Folio Notepad, if it's got enough inputs (that's why we need to know you requirements).
Compressor / FX processor - Cool Edit. Save yourself some money.
Keyboard - Evolution MK-261 or current equivalent, which is simply a controller which makes no sound on its own, but you then download free VSTi's (software instruments) and a free host application, and off you go. The keyboard will probably come with Cubasis thrown in if you want to get into midi.
Microphones - loads of previous advice on this forum, search for it.
Leads - yup, you won't get far without them.
Monitoring - the best headphones you can afford. In Uni accommodation, you won't be popular with big speakers.

But should you decline to accept SteveG's advice, tell us more about what you are trying to achieve - but whatever you do, don't start singing with a mock-cokkney* accent. ;)
