Is there anyway to have realtime compression instead of having to use the compressors that go onto racks?

There are no realtime effects at all in CEP - when it is recording, it concentrates its efforts on being able to record as many tracks as possible if needs be - so anything requiring extra processing is out, I'm afraid. Anyway, realtime processing is bad practice, because you have no real control of the track you are recording this way - it is much harder to make an accurate judgement about mic positioning, etc.

I agree with SteveG - but if you nevertheless want to look further at really realtime effects, search the forum for references to 'synthedit'.

Another issue with realtime compression is that even if you COULD do it, it would hold none of the benefit of hardware compression.
By compressing/limiting before the ADC you can record a hotter signal and prevent clipping. Realtime compression by ANY means using ANY software in a computer is going to happen AFTER the ADC. The risk of digital clipping is unchanged, because that happens at the ADC. There is no benefit except the time factor - the resulting data is unchanged compared to recording uncompressed and then compressing in the mix.

I guess if the compression was part of the performance, ie the way you play the instrument interacting with the effect of the compression, you might still want or need to do it even though it wouldn't be accomplishing the normal function, as Zemlin points out. An outboard effect remains the best option - if you've got one, of course.
