I have a problem when recording audio in Cool Edit 96. I am randomly getting some very narrow clicks. The amplitude of these clicks is not very great, less than the peak signal level, so they are only audible during relatively quiet parts of the recording. Curiously, this problem does not occur on <all> recordings or, at least, they are not audible on all recordings and they are not present if I record "silence"!
These clicks are <not> audible on the original source material, which is from either open reel tape (Revox B77 or G36) or CD, and I do not hear them during the recording process, only on playback.
Using the "de-click" filter doesn't <seem> to have any effect on them.
I wonder if anyone else has experienced this problem and may be able to suggest what the cause might be? Any information will be greatly appreciated, thanks.
My system consists of the following:
- Motherboard: Gigabyte P4 Titan 533. Model GA-8IHXP using the Intel 850E
chipset with a 533 MHz FSB.
- Processor: Intel Pentium 4, 2.4GHz, 533MHz FSB and 512kB cache.
- Memory: 2 x 128MB PC800 Rambus RIMM modules.
- Graphics: Asus V8420 Deluxe, Nvidia GeForce4. VGA, DVI and TV out and
TV in. 128MB DDR video memory.
- Sound: Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 with front mounted I/O module.
- Monitor: LiteOn Model B1997PNST. 17"
- CD-ROM: LG CD-RW Model CED-8083B. 4x 4x 32x speeds.
- DVD-ROM: Pioneer 48x speed.
- Floppy Drive: Standard 3 1/2" FDD.
-
O/S: Windows ME.[/list:f1b2b75d3d]

Dave.

Hi Dave,
Much of the time, this has to do with the sound card drivers or a sound card hardware conflict of some kind. The first step here would be to contact the manuafcturer of your sound card and install the LATEST drivers that they offer.
If that does not solve the problem, go through the steps on the web site (Syntrillium Knowledge Base Article) below to make sure that your system is optimized for Windows ME.

As far as I know, Cool '96 doesn't have a de-click filter and it doesn't support DX either. Are you sure it's Cool '96 you are using?

Hello Makedon,
Yes it is definitely "Cool Edit 96" that I am using.
My apologies, it was Algorithmix's "Sound Laundry - Terratec Edition" that has the "de-click" option! I got it mixed up with "Cool Edit 96"! <g>
Regards,
Dave.

Thanks for your reply to my query and for your advice.
I have only fairly recently bought the sound card, so haven't checked the maker's site for newer drivers, but I will do that.
I have been through some of the steps in the Syntrillium Knowledge Base Article you mention. I intend going through the remainder ASAP.
In the step "Enable DMA access" it says the following:
* First right click on the "My Computer " Icon and select "Properties"
* Next click the the device manager tab,
* Now lets open "Disk Drives" by clicking the "Plus sign (+)" to the left hand side
* Next you will need to double click your drive listed below that says DISK
TYPE.....(This may be 47, 001, 002 etc..)
* Now click the "Settings" tab, and put a check mark in the box labeled "DMA".
However, when I follow these instructions, I find that there is no box labelled "DMA"! Do you have any idea why this is so? The version of Windows ME I am using is 4.90.3000.
Regards,
Dave.

At one time this greatly puzzled me too (but it doesn't take much). On my system, it's because the 'Ultra ATA storage controller' seems to handle DMA settings. The driver isn't in the control panel but is configured in an Intel program in the programs folder. You can't actually do much with it apart from slow it down. Whether this is similar in your system (I'm using Win98SE) of course I can't say.

Rummaging around just now, I do find that I've got some hitherto undiscovered settings under 'DMA Controller Properties' - "Reserve DMA Buffer", where you can specify number of Kb to reserve, currently unticked, and "Restrict DMA transfers to memory below" either 16Mb or 4GB, also currently unticked. My system generally runs very well, so if it ain't broke..... but does anyone have any comment on these settings?

ISA cards could only address 16MB - the limit of the ISA bus and the 286 processor. When used in later systems, the driver had to be restricted not to offer them buffers they couldn't address. The 4GB limit I've not come across, but it is presumably a similar limit for some version of the PCI spec.
The 16MB limit is irrelevant to any current hardware, and how many of you have 4GB memory anyway?

Hello Ozpeter,
I have now also found the same settings! They're in Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager/System Devices/Direct Memory Controller/Properties/Settings.
I'm uncertain as to whether or not any of these settings should be enabled. There doesn't seem to be anything in the Help files about it and I couldn't find anything on Microsoft's web site either! If they should, how much "Reserved Memory" should be allocated to the "Reserve DMA Buffer"?
Regards,
Dave.
