I just bought a Mia 24/96, an I am wondering if I can put that in my system while still using my SBLive card for playback/headphones. I will only use the Mia for recording into CEP.

Thanks Smile

Many people do this. It can occasionally result in a hardware conflict over scare resources, like an IRQ, but mostly it works without any problem.

This is usually driver-dependent, but it's also true that you can't usually put two 'Blasters in a single computer - also a driver issue, since it gets confused as to who's in control at what time.

In many cases, two dissimilar cards can work fine in a system. In other cases, it can be a disaster.

Also, just be aware that since there is no sanitary way to clock-sync these cards together, you may experience some timing problems.

Why can't you just use the MIA to monitor?
Just curious... ;)

Best... -Jon

Well, I dont know how to use the headphones from the Mia =/ I would stick to just the Mia if I could do this...

The card has 2 analogue in/out and 1 digital in/out... could I use one of the A outs to my headphones?

Sorry for the noob questions Wink

Well, personally I'd be using a pair of the outputs from the MIA to drive an amp and some proper monitor speakers, but that's obviously not what you're trying to do.

On the other hand, maybe sending a pair of outs to your stereo and using that to drive the 'phones might be an option.

The MIA's just a better card all the way around. Your choice, though.

Best... -Jon

You might have some sync problems using two cards. Their clocks will not be locked, so if you lay a track with one card, while monitoring the previous recording with another, there might well be a problem when yo push all the tracks through one card.

Generally speaking, if you want multiple tracks, you should use a card with more inputs or cards which can be clocked together (naturally, these tend to be of the more expensive variety).

What I don't quite understand is why you would want to do this in the first place, why not simply use the Mia's own monitoring section and forget about the SB altogether?

I gotta go with Jon and Graeme here... You already have a really nice card (the Mia) and should be using it over and above anything that SB has to offer. As for driven an amp and a set of speakers, you could also consider a set of "powered" monitors and forego the amp altogether. (Mia straight to powered speakers). Wink

You have to bear in mind that those two analog outputs are each mono... so to run headphones in stereo you have to use both of them! The usual approach to this is either to use the Mia outs into the 'B' check input on a mixer, or just fed straight back to an aux input on your HiFi, and you use the headphone output on this for monitoring.

I suppose that the ideal situation for home use is to have a separate headphone amp bridged across the Mia's outputs, that you can control independently of your speaker monitoring. The Mia has a sufficiently low output impedance to drive several high-impedance inputs without any loss of signal, so there is no problem in feeding both boxes.
