Adobe Cool Edit Pro? I don't see them leaving the name the same. I'm wondering what everyone's opinion is on that subject. I know the whole Adobe thing has been beaten to death, but I think it'd be nice/potentially funny to hear people opinions on the name.

I personally think they'll change it, but I have no idea what they'll change it to. I'm sure it'll be something dramatic though.

Why is everyone stuck on this?! Leave it alone already! If Adobe happens to change cool edit around, make it more expensive and what not, then just stick with cool edit 2.0 or 2.1. Simple as that.

Judging from the angry to furious responses from both camps on this one I think it will be called 'Adobe Abomination Pro' in keeping with the new entirely unnacceptable feature set they have planned...hehe, let me take my tongue out of my cheek now.Big Grin

Why on earth would they change it?
The name thing already has a topic, and quite frankly, I don't see how there could be any confusion about it:

They spoke with me about that already, and I firmly said no. I won't support this purchase that far... Besides, they'd probably make way too much money if they did that. Cool

It's going to be called ACE (Adobe Cool Edit). I know from personal inside information. Well not me personally, but a friend of mine. Well no, not really, but you could imagine. Actually I think I read it here on the forum somewhere. Someone just said it would be a good name actually. I'm just a Janitor. Cool

My guess would be for something more like "Premiere Audio", since that's pretty clearly Adobe's primary focus - bringing a new app to users of Premier. Or if they get especially sinister, it could end up just being "Premiere", with the functionality of CEP absorbed by that app (although from a practical standpoint, that would result in one massively honking huge piece of software).

If AQdobe makes changes to our software, and a new version won't easily run on the upcoming new Windows version, you may be forced to not only stick with 2.1 but the older Windows versions.

Just a thought...

Precisely why I decided... instead of rebuilding my present DAW, I am going to build a totally separate system and and keep my Win98fe/CEP1.2a (current system) as a "safety" backup! Wink

Let's take the suggested names from top to bottom:

Adobe Abomination Pro - of course not!
"ACE" (Adobe Cool Edit) - no. (Adobe already uses the "ACE" abbreviation for the Adobe Certified Expert training program)
Premiere Audio - no.
Adobedit - no.
Adobe Audioshop - no.
Adobe Soundshop - no.
Adobe Arranger - no.
Adobe Debut - no.
Adobe SoundMaker - no.
Adobe MusicDeluxe - no.
Adobe Bravo - no.

Hmmm. What could it be???

Enjoy the Fourth of July weekend. Then, check the Adobe website on Monday morning. :)

I posted this message on the Adobe Forum Comments and Announcements page (http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14@@.ee6b30e), but I thought I'd cross-post it for the benefit of those who didn't see it.:P

Scott McCullough

>I suspect that given the number of registered users, the Cool Edit forums are far more active than any of the Adobe forums (pure speculation on my part - I have NOT studied activity on any of the Adobe forums).

I suspect you will be surprised at the volume and quality of the posts in the many forums that make up this site. In the few forums I frequent, there are large contingents of opinionated, knowledgeable regulars who are quite willing to take Adobe to task when necessary. Such dissent is allowed, and apparently even encouraged. Many of the forums include "feature wish lists," and judging by the number of Adobe employees who occasionally reply the company actually pays close attention to what is said. Only when a thread degenerates into a petty flame war will the moderators take action--otherwise it's pretty much a free flow of information.

I can certainly understand the alarm felt by Syntrillum forum members--not only is a long-standing forum a repository of collective wisdom, it's also a community. Anything that threatens either that information or that sense of community is bound to be disconcerting.

I'm not at all familiar with Syntrillum's products, and I can't speak for Adobe's corporate direction--I'm only an end user of their print publishing solutions. But it's quite obvious that with this acquisition Adobe has inherited a large and loyal customer base, which they would be foolish to alienate. I can attest that this is one of the best forums on the Internet, and that, on the whole, Adobe does a wonderful job of supporting the users of all its many products. When and if the time comes to merge the Syntrillum forums into the Adobe fold, I am certain that great pains will be taken to welcome the Syntrillum forum members and preserve the valuable content their current forum holds.

We'll just see what happens. I myself don't really think about this whole Adobe/Syntrillium thing anymore. We can't change the situation so it's best to take it for what it is.

However, do we want to create a list of e-mail addresses in case what happened a few days ago happens again, permanently? (Can't e-mail each other without being able to access the forum site.) I'm not an expert on all of the nuances of this forum software but it appears to me that we can only e-mail members of the forum, we can't see what the e-mail address is. If I am wrong, can somebody set me straight.

We could create a file on the Collaboration site for such addresses, but that's a pretty public place. I will collect e-mail addresses if anybody wants to go that route. Just send me an e-mail - don't even need to say anything - and I can get your e-mail address from that. I'll add it to the list and e-mail you back so you have my e-mail address. Or maybe somebody has a better idea for how to compile an e-mail list. Or maybe nobody thinks it's a good idea.Question

I don't buy that. Certainly, we can't change what's happened, but as a community, we can affect the outcome of future decisions, even if only very small ones. I've seen it done on forums like this before; where perhaps something was removed from a new version of software, then after sufficient feedback, replaced on the next update.

Will we change things? I don't know. But, I don't plan on giving up so quickly. I've already contacted the Mayor of Washington State and he plans on contacting the Senate who will contact the President of the US, who plans on contacting leaders from around the world. This situation will change! Where am I?

My address is in my profile. Anyone who wants it can grab it if they like. However, I'll ask that if placing on some sort of web database (which I don't mind), please replace the "@" with its equivalent word "at", so that robots (or whatever they're called) don't grab them and send me junk! Thanks.

I hope this doesn't get deleted... Smile Since Synt sold to Adobe, I guess this shouldn't be a problem anymore. :P

From the Cool Edit 1.51 help file:
----------------------------------
"
About the Creator

That's me, David Johnston... I have been working with various sound programs since about 1991, and have been toying with electronic noise makers (synthesizers) since the 70's. In high school I was even a pseudo-member of the band with a home-made programmable "sequencer" that I used to make Pac-Man noises for the song Pac Man Fever. I also started programming while in high school, when the school got a Commodore PET computer. Shortly thereafter I bought an Atari 800 (summer 1982) and started my programming career. I have since programmed on Apple ]['s, Commodore 64's, Macintoshes, IBM PC's (the original on up to today's), numerous mainframes and workstations. I attended Eastern Montana College for my first two years, then moved to the Seattle area and got my BS in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Washington in 1991. I now work for a large software company, and write fun programs on my home PC when I get a chance. This is one of them! With the ShareWare registrations I have been able to purchase a Pentium 90, so development on Cool Edit has thus accelerated. I gave my ol' 386-25 to my brother-in-law who is starting college.

Syntrillium Software Corporation was founded by Robert Ellison and myself, and we intend to continue bringing innovative and imaginative software to all those who like to have cool software on their computers.

We offer another ShareWare program which is a kaleidoscope screen saver that actually is really cool! It will even change patterns based on audio for your own personal "laser show". Another useful utility we offer is an RPN calculator for Windows which I use almost every day for one reason or another. A swirling illusion screen saver is also available that makes walls appear to breathe, or objects in general appear to swish around and distort once you look away from the patterns.

We have tried to include all the wave editing features we have found useful, and are welcome to any suggestions for new waveform transformation functions, user interface, file formats (helps if you can provide a description of the new file format you want), and features. There are still big plans in for upcoming versions of Cool Edit. The "wave" function in this program is quite unique and I personally hope you check it out. It works only with stereo waveforms, and is the same function as in the freeware program out called MINDSYNC (wave.exe or wave87.exe) which I finished in July of 1992; see Wave for more details. This program should be compatible with every sound card on the market that has Windows drivers available for it. Please read the special notes in the Contents section If you have problems.

We hope you find lots of uses for Cool Edit, and find it fun and enjoyable to use. Feel free to let us know what you think of it. It's because of input from numerous users out there that the program has evolved to what it is today.
"

Well - I was right about the name change, but I was wrong about it being "dramatic". I think Adobe Audition works. I'm much happier, however, to see the screenshots for the product. It looks like CEP and NOT Photoshop, Premiere, etc.
