You are asking some pretty basic "I haven't searched the forum or read the manual/help file or checked the site's tutorials" questions here.

But I'll give you a bit of benefit of the doubt as your first question could be, "how do you stop cracks and pops from happening when recording"?

In which case let us know about your system, what you are recording and how, and what version of Cool Edit you are using. It's much better to stop such things at source rather than to use a tool from the 'Effects > Noise Reduction" menu afterwards (now there's a hint, if you have CEP2.x or the relevant add-on for CE2000).

As for your second question, well, parts of the help files are a little unclear on prodedure, so, use 'Edit > Mix down' to create a wave file of the contents of your session, then save that in the format of your choice - mp3 if you must.

It doesn't - it creates a temporary unsaved file called "mixdown", which you can save where you like in the normal windows fashion, giving it whatever name you desire. In the 'save' dialogue, use the "save as type" box to pick your required format (eg mp3) and use the 'Options' box to specify, well, the options for the format.
