Have any of the Echo MIA users run into issues with Media Player 6.4? After celebrating the successful install of the MIA, and the fact that it worked with all audio editors, I then tried to view some avi's and mpegs. That turned out to be not such a pretty picture. In fact, it turned out to be no picture at all. The entire computer froze. I called Echo tech and was told that 6.4 was not supported. I asked if there was a workaround and was told by the first person I spoke with that there was not.
While I was on hold waiting to speak with someone with a little more experience, I started to fiddle around with the Windows sounds settings. Specifically, the 'Scheme' that says "No Sounds". Instead of choosing that, which disables Windows sounds completely, I tried something similar, but different: I manually chose "None" for every event that had a sound associated with it. The net result was that there were no longer any events to trigger potential lo-fi wav files (which is the reason Echo recommends disabling Windows sounds in the first place), but technically I had not disabled Windows sounds. And making that change did enable me to play the files I couldn't play before making the change.
Whether or not playing avi or mpeg files with Windows sounds engaged creates the same potential problem Echo was trying to avoid by recommending the "No Sounds" scheme in the first place remains a legitimate question. I told the 2nd tech what I'd done and that it allowed video files to be played with 6.4 and the MIA card and he was surprised. He said he thought the idea of manually disabling each Windows sound event while not totally disabling Windows sound event was interesting. He's going to check it out as far as the other matter is concerned. Anybody here have any input?
