Hello there. I work for a radio in Czech Republic. I saved bunch of songs and files via Cool edit pro (1.2a) in to wave format from other radios on the web.
Than, I converted them via dBpowerAMP Music Converter (right click on the file) to MP3, I put good sample rate for CD quality. After conversion, the file, now in MP3, has distortion (digital distortion?) and if I play it in SoundForge, the CLIPS turn RED and the quality is really screwed. Is there any way to fix this? Maybe some filter or something?

Many thanks and greeting from Europe.

Strikes me that if the files weren't clipped in Cool Edit, then this isn't really a Cool Edit problem. I can't comment on what Soundforgery does to your MP3, but if you play it in another app, or even open it in CEP (assuming that you have the plugin), what is it like then?

Anything called 'dBpowerAMP Music Converter' sounds like it was intended to wreck files... Evil

Well, u r right, it isn't a Cool Edit Pro problem.
When I open the file in CEP, it's terrible, the clips are red as hell. I can not seem to reduce the distortion. Maybe (probably) i am not that good at it. Well, I am gonna go through tutorial again and will think of something. Thanks anyway, finally I am off work and there is a long weekend to try to fix this...

P.S. what format would you recommend for the files made from another on line radio, in order to put them on CD as audios??

One thing you might try doing is normalizing to a more conservative level (say, -1dB, maybe even -1.5dB) on the original wave BEFORE creating the MP3. It's not uncommon when converting a 'hot' wave to MP3 that you may experience some clipping. Your example sounds a bit extreme, but give this a try.

Also, we are talking about 16-bit, 44.1k files, right? I can't speak for the dBPower software (though I know their MP2 conversions are highly praised) but it's possible that it might not like 32-bit files, and that could cause all sorts of problems. ;)

As for burning audio to CD in general...leave it as WAV.

If you can open the MP3 files in CEP, then presumably you have the plugin. In this case, why can't you create the MP3 with CEP as well? At least we know this works...

If you want to play your music on a 'normal' CD player, then just store it as 44.1kHz 16-bit stereo, and make the CD directly from this. If you want to store the files as MP3's, then you could play safe, and normalise the tracks before saving them to -2dB, and then make the MP3s with CEP. At this point, you just need to copy the files with your CD-writing app, directly to the CD. (You shouldn't need to normalise to -2dB, by the way...)

And try to keep away from Soundforgery. Or if you must indulge in this rather antisocial habit, then try to do it in some privacy!
